Off-line, watching video is more often than not a social experience as friends and family gather around the telly. Whilst, arguably, online and in the age of the laptop or smartphone, it’s very much a solitary exercise. Attempts at making the online viewing experience more social aren’t anything new but video monetization platform Invideous has perhaps a novel solution: something it’s calling a ‘social playhead’.
Installable as a plug-in for most of the popular video hosting platforms, in the same way that a regular video playhead lets a viewer see at what point they are in the video, the social playhead lets users see who else is watching the video and, specifically, at what point they are at too. Back in November 2009, Google [GOOG] announced that 1080p full HD video was coming to YouTube. That of course happened and we now have access to 1080p when users upload video at that resolution.The next step up from there is 4K video that has a resolution of 4096 x 2304 pixels making it four times larger than 1080p.4K video has an ideal screen size of 25 feet. Google point out that IMAX movies are projected by two 2K resolution projectors.For those wanting to see how 4K looks on YouTube you can check out this playlist which has a number of 4K video samples for you to view.A few things to note here are that your screen on a computer probably wont handle that many pixels, so you wont get the full effect. When Apple [AAPL] announced the Apple iPhone 4 the other day, one of the new features called FaceTime was announced that would "finally" bring video calling to a mobile phone. However, we have seen this in the UK for maybe 7 or even 8 years now, but anyways!We suspected the other day that companies like Skype would look to using or integrating with FaceTime that would allow video calls to reach beyond the current iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 requirement that is in place. The new feature supplements its existing video hotspot ad and e-commerce offering.
The startup has also announced new funding in the “low six figures” from private investors from the digital and television sectors. Prior to this, Swiffen, which was founded in late 2008, was entirely bootstrapped.

One of the big features announced today on the Apple iPhone 4 was FaceTime. FaceTime brings video calling to the new iPhone 4 from Apple [AAPL] and allows users to use either the front facing video camera or rear facing video camera to make video calls to other iPhone 4 users over a WiFi connection.Note that we mentioned "over a WiFi connection". At WWDC, Steve Jobs announced that FaceTime in 2010 was a WiFi only deal, but that Apple is working with carriers to bring FaceTime over 3G networks.FaceTime works right out of the box according to the Apple site. Skype are adding a new feature to their VoIP video chat system that will allow up to 5 video calls to conference together.The new group video chat system will move in to a public Beta starting next week and will allow users to more easily speak in groups over video allowing families to connect for example, or allow businesses to meet remotely.When in beta the video group chat service will be free although when it comes out of beta in the next few months, Skype are planning on charging users to utilise the service.Normally Skype to Skype Video and Voice calls are free and charges are only made for subscriptions or calls to landlines and mobile phones and answer phone services for example.Right now, pricing for five way video calling isn’t known, but I suspect it will be announced... 
Over the past couple of weeks, Google [GOOG] has slowly rolled out a new video player on YouTube. The new video player has a different look and also brings a few handy features to give more in depth analysis of the video being watched.The layout is different in that the red progress bar is now slightly transparent and runs just under the video. Below that is a section where the play button, volume control and other buttons can be found.New features also include the ability to right click on the video which pops up a menu where you can select various options such as a broadband speed test, video details, debug information and more.Right now the video doesn’t support those showing ads although a fix is said to be coming in the next few weeks. The Nokia N8 has a 12 megapixel camera sensor allowing it to capture HD video at 720p. The video below shows a video captured on the device. Nokia point out that the video captured wasn’t modified in anyway and also mention the software used is an early build which indicates the quality could be slightly improved by enhancing the video processing.This is the first HD video sample captured on the upcoming Nokia N8, shot in 720p. This amazing footage of a dancer on a rooftop has not been enhanced or tweaked in any way. The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are designed to teach kids and young adults about the outdoors, how to tie knots, setup a tent, light fires and generally survive outdoors. Now it seems the Cub Scouts are moving with the times and have launched a new badge which is an attempt to bring them up to date.
The new badge is for Video Games, yeah that’s right if you are in the Boy Scouts you will be able to earn a badge for sitting on the sofa and playing your favourite video games console, although you will also have to complete a few additional tasks as well.
It looks like there are two versions of the video games badge available, you can see all the requirements below you need to complete in order to earn each one.

Thanks to the Gizmodo Apple iPhone 4G leak a couple of weeks back, we now know it is highly likely that the iPhone 4G will get a forward facing camera.The reason mobile phones have forward facing cameras is usually for making video calls. In the latest iPhone SDK (beta 2), there are now references that go more in to detail on how the camera will work. This includes details of the type of connection to make it run.The first message discusses video conferencing and indicates that the phone needs to register with a service somewhere to use conferencing features.“ACCOUNT_NOT_REGISTERED_MESSAGE = “This device has not been registered for video conferencing.”;”Next up are messages relating to the iPhone 4G needing a Wi-Fi connection to make video... 
Since we saw the photos of the iPhone prototype recently, it has been pretty clear that the next generation iPhone or iPhone 4G will feature a front facing camera.
More evidence of this has been found in the latest version of the iPhone SDK for iPhone OS 4.0, although this sort of thing has been found before in previous versions so it doesn’t guarantee that the iPhone 4G will supoprt video chat.
The following lines of code have been found in the latest iPhone SDK.
IMAVCHAT_COULD_NOT_CONNECT_NO_REMOTE_WIFI = “The video call could not connect because a remote Wi-Fi connection could not be established.”;
IMAVCHAT_DISCONNECTED_NO_LOCAL_WIFI = “The video call disconnected because the local Wi-Fi connection was lost.”

Google [GOOG] have added an interesting change (perhaps for April fools day only) that can convert videos to ASCII art. The option can be found on any video by simply clicking on the tab in the video box where you set the resolution. [France] French startup Stupeflix, the XML-based online video platform, launches its new Stupeflix Play feature today which turns content from a website into a dynamic, broadcast quality video with just “a couple lines of code.”
The company’s aim is to considerably lower the barriers for site owners – from ecommerce to publishers – to add video to their offerings in order to increase stickiness and advertising opportunities.
The way Stupeflix Play works is as follows: First you insert some javascript into a site, then select the bits you want turned into a video and voila, a video appears of your content. We have heard quite a few rumors that the next generation Apple [AAPL] iPhone will come with the ability to make video calls. Details of a possible ‘Video Chat’ feature have already been found in the latest iPhone SDK 3.2.
Now the UK mobile provider O2, who initially had the exclusive rights to the iPhone have included something interesting in one of their iPhone tariffs.
The o2 website shows the pricing for ‘UK video calls’ under the iPhone tariff as the same price as voice calls, which could indicate that the next generation iPhone will feature a video chat feature.
It is interesting to note that O2 intend to charge the same amount for video calls and voice calls, obviously video calls would require quite a bit more bandwidth.

The guys over at 9.5 Mac have uncovered something interesting in the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK, possible evidence that future versions of the Apple iPhone and Apple iPhone will feature some sort of video chatting capability.
A couple of icons were discovered in the iPhone SDK 3.2 which seem to suggest that there will be video calling in a future device. Also found in the SDK were some iPad telephony applications that have some Video Chat strings.
If we did get video chat in the next version of the iPhone and Apple iPad, this would mean some sort of front facing video camera. 9 to 5 Mac have pointed out that it is possible that Apple could have transferred the code from their Mac telephony products, although it is highly unlikely that they built icons and compressed them into the iPAD SDK if they...

Ion has added a new pocket video camera to their range, the ION Twin Video, which is slightly different than some of the pocket video cameras we have seen before as it features two lenses.
The camera will record video of what you are pointing the camera at and also record video of you, the video of you is then displayed in the corner of the video you have taken.
Whilst it seems like a novel idea, and could be fun to use for certain situations too see your reactions to things like roller coaster rides, we are not sure if it would be any good to use as an everyday pocket video camera.

We have see quite a few different accessories for the iPhone 3GS that are designed to help you record video, the latest one is the OWLE iPhone Video Mount.

If you own a first or second generation Apple iPhone, your phone will now be capable of recording video without any hacking. Up until now the only way to get video recording on an iPhone or an iPhone 3G was to jailbreak the phone and install software that wasn’t approved by Apple. Thanks to Apple releasing details on the API regarding video capture, official applications can now be made that are compatible with the older phones.
Ustream is one of the first applications that allows video recording officially on older iPhones. Ustream is a video streaming application that is free to download. As well as being able to stream with the software it also has the ability to work as a video recorder too allowing you to capture movies from the camera.

For those iPhone 2G and 3G owners who haven’t jailbroken their iPhone there is now an application available to let you record video on your iPhone called iVideoCamera.
iVideoCamera lets you record a short video on your iPhone 2G or 3G, you can then save it in your camera roll or share it to Youtube, Facebook or Vimeo.
The quality of the video isn’t the best, but according to the developers they are working on an update which will improve the video quality and also the frame rate.
Currently the application only captures about three frames per second, and the videos are limited to just one minutes in length.
We have just had a brief play with the iVideoCamera application, and the quality isn’t the best, I would recommend holding off buying it until the developers...

Namco and Zippo have teamed up to launch a range of classic video game themed lighters.
The Namco Classic Video Game Lighters come in four different styles, so there is bound to be one to suit every video game fan out there.
