Nokia Demo Their Explore and Share Super Speedy Wireless Transfer Device via GadgetyNews.com February 28th, 2010 at 20:06

image Nokia are working on a super swift wireless data transfer technology that they’ve dubbed: Explore and Share. Nok’s Helsinki branch of their Research Center took the concept for an outing at a Nokia Store where Jyri Hämäläinen presents an impressive show and tell. In the video he walks you through a live example of how it can be used, including wirelessly transferring a Bruce Springsteen album onto a phone in less than 10 seconds. As Jyri explains, it could be used to fill a device you’ve just bought with stacks of the apps, tunes, and the likes within minutes of purchasing your new Nok. Explore and Share is based on new radio technology and as you’ll see in the vid the system comes in two parts – the ‘writer’ which you place your mobile...

Bump iPhone App Review via Technology Blog (UK), Hi-Tech Gadgets & Gaming - Zath! January 12th, 2010 at 19:47

image ‘Bump’ is a free application available for both iPhone OS and Android that allows people to exchange contact information, or other files, by bumping hands while holding their device. I tested the application with an iPhone and iPod Touch, which transferred data from one device to the other in seconds. Both users need to have Bump on their device, and when you want to transfer information, both users have to confirm the transfer. When you launch Bump for the first time, you’ll be prompted to enter contact card information for yourself. When you ‘bump’ with someone, you can transfer just certain information such as your phone number, email or address. If you want, you can send the recipient your entire contact card. Bump has the ability to transfer more than contact information...

Housing stock transfer via An incredulous eye on the isles December 14th, 2009 at 13:26

Now remind me again, just what benefits Housing Stock Transfer has brought to the islands....At least £1m in consultants fees, 7 years of political wrangling and the off-loading of the housing debt from the Council to the Government, and where are we exactly?Houses not being built....The Council filling the funding gap....Financial crisis....Oh yes, and very limited political say by the Councillors over the whole process. What a wonderful success it has been. The ideological decision by Labour to drive Stock Transfer through has been the root cause of the problem and with budgets tightening there are only going to be temporary solutions to the underlying problem. And all the time, the construction sector struggles more and...

CopyTrans Photo Review (Transfer Photos To iPod / iPhone) via Technology Blog (UK), Hi-Tech Gadgets & Gaming - Zath! December 9th, 2009 at 19:40

image CopyTrans Photo is a utility from WindSolutions that allows you to manage the photos on your iPod or iPhone by dragging and dropping them to and from your PC. The interface is extremely easy and simple to grasp with the window split into 3 sections – the first showing the photos on your iPod or iPhone, the second showing the photos in the currently selected folder and the third offering an explorer view of all the folders on your hard drive. When testing with both an iPod and iPhone I found managing photos on the devices very straight forward and intuitive. It was a great utility when wanting to transfer photos taken on an iPhone to my PC and vice-versa, with easy to view thumbnails. If you sync photos to your iPod with iTunes, you don’t have much choice where customisation is...

Does Bringing A Terrorist Suspect From Gitmo to New York Confer Any More Legal Rights? via The Volokh Conspiracy November 20th, 2009 at 22:48

One of the many interesting issues raised by the decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other terrorist suspects in New York is whether transferring them to New York gives them any additional rights that they could assert to try to stop the prosecution against them. On Wednesday, the seven GOP Senators on the Judiciary Committee (including my former boss, Senator Cornyn) sent a letter asking the Administration if the transfer could somehow change the detainees’ immigration status. And others may be wondering if the transfer could create constitutional rights, such as Fourth Amendment, Fifth Amendment, or Due Process rights. The question is, does the transfer from one place to another itself create any rights? The Fourth Amendment question has an easy answer: The detainees would...

Return to regulated testing: When Hell freezes over via Pace N.Ireland Education Weblog October 3rd, 2009 at 17:03

On Friday 7th August 2009 Caitriona Ruane said: “I am convinced that when educationalists are seen to be working within the Guidance and delivering a quality education for all children, there will be a realisation that the old system could not continue. At that time, we can return to the issue of legislation.”   This statement was part of a response to a question on cross party support on post-primary transfer arrangements.  Mr G Robinson asked the Minister of Education (AQW 8875/09) if, and when, she intends to bring forward plans for post primary transfer that will command cross party support. Minister of Education: The arrangements for post-primary transfer described in the Department of Education’s published Transfer 2010 Guidance attracted supportive comments from...

Football’s. Transfer. System. Is. Flawed. via EPL Talk September 8th, 2009 at 15:18

image Isn’t it amazing how long it takes Fifa to put put five words together and then act upon them. Football’s transfer system is flawed and everybody knows it, so why is it only now that constructive action is being taken? The biggest problem faced by the current system is the widespread tapping-up of players and the lack of either a deterrent or preventative measures. Prior to last week’s transfer ban on Chelsea, little had been done to catch offenders and even when charged, the resultant punishments have been meaningless. A five or six figure fine for example, is going to do nothing to deter a team that regularly shells out tens of millions on their latest acquisitions. Back in 2005 Chelsea were involved in one of the most high profile disciplinary cases in...

Chelsea Transfer Ban via Chelsea FC-True Blue September 6th, 2009 at 20:26

image Chelsea have been sensationally banned from signing new players until January 2011 after being found guilty of tapping up the reserve team sensation Gael Kakuta from Lens when he was 16 year old player under contract with Lens. Chelsea are the next big club after AS Roma were banned for a transfer window for poaching Mexesfrom Auxerre in 2004. But Mexes was over the age of 18 at the time of transfer and therefore deserved to get a one transfer window ban for tapping up. But for the transfer of a 16 year old does a two window or a one year ban makes sense ? Further there are several clubs which sign players in large numbers under the age of 18 for a nominal fee go unpunished. The best cases so far are against Manchester United getting Federico Macheda from Lazio in similar fashion and the...

Straw admits Lockerbie trade link via The Lockerbie Case September 5th, 2009 at 17:21

Trade and oil played a part in the decision to include the Lockerbie bomber in a prisoner transfer deal, Jack Straw has admitted.Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the UK justice secretary said trade was "a very big part" of the 2007 talks that led to the prisoner deal with Libya. (...)But officials admit the prisoner transfer agreement (PTA) was part of a wider set of negotiations aimed at bringing Libya in from the international cold, and improving British trade prospects with the country."Libya was a rogue state," Mr Straw told the paper. "We wanted to bring it back into the fold."And yes, that included trade because trade is an essential part of it and subsequently there was the BP deal." (...)A spokesman for Mr Straw said the minister had always made clear that wider considerations...

Kakutagate – Fact and Fiction via EPL Talk September 3rd, 2009 at 21:42

image In the short time since Chelsea were found guilty of inducing Gael Kakuta to breach his contract at RC Lens, and banned from the registration of new players until 1st Sept 2010 – i.e. two transfer windows away – a lot has been written, blogged, said and alleged – some fact, some fiction. Let’s separate fact from fiction: “Chelsea have been singled out by UEFA/FIFA” RC Lens put forward a case to the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber, arguing that Gael Kakuta had breached his contract with them to join Chelsea, and that the West London club induced the frenchman to do so. Chelsea weren’t “singled out” by anyone, the DRC can’t accuse a club of any wrong-doing, a case has to be put forward to them. So the DRC is a courtroom where...

Kacar, the hit of Bundesliga transfer window via Soccer Pie August 21st, 2009 at 15:56

image The closing of the transfer window might be marked by the unexpected transfer of Serbian international, Gojko Kacar from Hertha to Stuttgart. German press says that Stuttgart are willing to pay fantastic 12 million Euros for the midfielder, but none of the interested parties were ready to confirm this. „I have a valid contract with Hertha and the only thing I can say is that I am focused on the game in Copenhagen. My mind is clear, I am not thinking about what future may bring“ said Kacar. The next few days can’t change the facts: Hertha are out of money and they need a forward. Stuttgart haven’t got financial problems, after selling Mario Gomez to Bayern, but during the transfer window they brought a midfielder similar to the young Serb. He is truly an interesting player and we...

City claim to have ditched Lescott bid via The Guardian World News August 21st, 2009 at 11:51

• Hughes says City has 'walked away' from transfer• Deal could still happen as Moyes wants to make four signingsManchester City manager, Mark Hughes, today said the club no longer wants to sigh Joleon Lescott from Everton. City have been tracking Lescott for months but have been unable to agree a fee for the defender despite bidding close to £20m.Everton say they want nearer £30m with the player having already handed in a transfer request. The episode has leading to a disintegration in relations between the clubs with David Moyes, the Everton manager, labelling City a "disgrace" for the way in which they have pursued Lescott before then dropping the 27-year-old for Thursday's 4-0 Europa League win over Sigma Olomouc after detecting a collapse in the player's attitude.Speaking today,...

Lescott transfer request rejected via The Guardian World News August 11th, 2009 at 11:23

• Defender made request after Manchester City bid rejected• David Moyes: 'I have no intention of selling my best players'Joleon Lescott has intensified his efforts to force through a move to Manchester City by submitting a written transfer request to the Everton manager, David Moyes. The England international has been the subject of two rejected bids from City this summer, for £15m and £18m, and a third offer of around £22m is expected to follow the defender's latest move to increase his salary from £40,000 to £80,000-a-week.Whether the improved fee and Lescott's written request will tempt Moyes into a U-turn on a deal is unlikely, however, with the Scot adamant he will not strengthen a Premier League rival at the expense of the team that has finished fifth for the past two...

Arsenal target tries to force transfer with Darren Bent-esque rant via Off The Post August 3rd, 2009 at 11:05

Don’t Chamakh me angry! Arsenal transfer target Marouane Chamakh has launched a tirade against current club Bordeaux in a bid to force through his transfer. Megrahi deadline will be missed via The Lockerbie Case July 31st, 2009 at 15:08

This is the headline over a report on the BBC News website. It reads in part:]A 90-day deadline to decide the prison transfer request of the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing will not be met by the Scottish Government.Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill told BBC Radio Scotland he needed more information before reaching a decision. However, he stressed that the final outcome would not be affected by "political or economic" factors. An application was received in May to let Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi complete his sentence in a Libyan jail.Mr MacAskill is currently considering the transfer request as well as an application for release on compassionate grounds by the Libyan. He told BBC Radio Scotland's Morning Extra programme: "There's a 90-day timescale within the PTA (prisoner transfer...

Inter might pay more money for Samuel Eto’o via Soccer Pie July 26th, 2009 at 08:26

image In spite of Jose Mourinho’s accusing silence, caused by the fact that Max Moratti didn’t meet his demands in the transfer window, it seems that the Portuguese is perfectly aware that he will benefit from the summer transfer window. According to Italian press, the statements that this is not the team he had hoped for and that it will be very hard to fight reinforced Juventus in Serie A, not to mention the Champions League are not only an alibi. We think that the Portuguese is building a myth. If Inter wins a trophy this season, Mourinho will take all the credit, and if not he will blame it on the transfer window. The main reason why we think that Inter are the winners on calciomercato is the good deal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s transfer and signing Eto’o. First of...

Megrahi requests release from jail on compassionate grounds via The Lockerbie Case July 25th, 2009 at 09:27

[This is the headline over Lucy Adams's coverage in The Herald of the story that was broken yesterday on this blog. Her article can be read here. The following are extracts:]The man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing has applied to Scottish ministers for release on compassionate grounds, a move which if granted would allow him to return to Libya without dropping his appeal.Ministers received the application yesterday from Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer last year.As with the case of prisoner transfer, the decision rests with Kenny MacAskill, the Justice Secretary. Unlike prisoner transfer, compassionate release does not require the prisoner to abandon any ongoing legal proceedings. The Justice Secretary is thought to have released three...

Clichy Puts His Size 11s In, Eboue and Transfer Tattle via A Cultured Left Foot July 25th, 2009 at 08:23

Gael Clichy has aimed his size 11s fairly and squarely at Emmanuel Adebayor this morning whilst promoting his new Umbro boots: I really believe if you are a player who thinks only about money then you could end up at Manchester City. You have to think if you want to play for a big club and have your image or if you want to earn big money. When you ask someone to move for something like £300k per week it is just crazy. That is pretty much indicative of the reasons that Clichy believes Adebayor moved which is somewhat at odds with the rationale that Adebayor put forward. Clichy is not unduly concerned with the City spending pattern these past transfer windows: It does not always mean a team will do well. Sometimes when you have players coming in it can take six to seven months for them...

BFC: Latest Transfer Rumours via Barnsley FC Blog | On The Ponty End July 22nd, 2009 at 22:35

image It's that time of year when transfer rumour and speculation is rife. Perhaps you've recently heard something via a friend of a friend or work colleague, but almost always, it's the kind of story that is not necessarily in the mainstream press or via the club's arm of communication. How much of this has any truth or basis is obviously questionable, but like many other fans it's nice to dream and wonder, we love the banter as much as any other group of fans.To this aim, OnThePontyEnd has created a stream of such stories via Twibes, gained from numerous sources. These "mini-releases" may contain further player information or reveal the rumour source in more detail, but will be updated (permitting) during the transfer / loan window. So, what is a Twibe?A twibe is a group of Twitter users...

Alonso To Leave Liverpool? via Football Banter July 14th, 2009 at 15:13

The Times is saying that Rafa Benitez will permit Xabi Alonso to leave Liverpool if he hands in a transfer request. They report that Alonso has stated to Benitez that he would like to leave but has not handed in a transfer request. As such it is now unlikely that Alonso will be on Liverpool’s pre-season tour in Asia which may allow for the transfer to be completed with time to re-invest the transfer fee which could eclipse £30m if Real are still tempted. Alonso was in good form for Liverpool last season and his absence will be felt in midfield especially having lost out to Man City who swooped early for Gareth...

Megrahi to drop appeal if Libya transfer is agreed via The Lockerbie Case July 11th, 2009 at 10:09

The man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing has signed a secret document agreeing to drop legal proceedings if Scottish ministers allow him to return home to Tripoli.Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who is appealing his conviction, has given the document to the Libyan government on the instruction that they cannot hand it over until Scottish ministers agree to his transfer. His decision has led to an international political impasse as Kenny MacAskill, the Justice Secretary, cannot complete the transfer until Megrahi has dropped the appeal. Supporters are pushing for the "compassionate release" of Megrahi as a preferable alternative.Legal experts say the minister could agree to such a move without an application from the Libyan, who is suffering terminal prostate cancer and whose condition...

Is Our Pursuit for Melo Over? via Arsenal News News News June 30th, 2009 at 17:02

So the news from Italy is that Felipe Melo has a signed a new contract at Fiorentina.  What does this mean?  There has been so much traffic over a proposed transfer to Arsenal that it cannot all be dismissed as ideal cyber-space talk.  Something must have been going on in the background and something might still be happening. We are mere mortal and all we can do is merely speculate, but players have signed new contracts with teams as a way of giving their current clubs a larger transfer fee.  Admittedly this is not normally done in the same transfer window, but I do not rule out the possibility of this happening.  By signing a new contract Fiorentina can demand say £20 million, as opposed to his buyout clause of £14 million. This is a story that has some more distance to run;...

Manchester United Change Transfer Tact via EPL Talk June 17th, 2009 at 21:05

Let’s look at the numbers since the Premier League was founded in the 1992-93 season up until the end of the 2008-2009 season: The table is ranked from the highest to the lowest by net spend — taking into consideration the...
