Day 2771: Mysteries of Doctor Who #16: Is he MORE than just a Time Lord? via The Very Fluffy Diary of Millennium Dome, Elephant August 24th, 2008 at 02:07

Saturday:"In the end, Doctor, you are JUST another Time Lord," says Mr Davros."Oh Davros… I am far more than JUST another Time Lord," replies Mr Dr Sylv.Or rather he doesn't because that exchange was cut from their confrontation over the Hand of Omega, and yet somehow EVERYONE manages to know about it anyway.Nowadays, Mr Dr David will tell you that he is "…not just a Time Lord. I'm the LAST of the Time Lords." But does that make him "more" or is there something more to it?What exactly was that mythical exchange supposed to mean?Followers of the Cartmel Master Plan would tell you that this is one of a series of hints – along with what mad Lady Peinforte didn't say in "Silly Nemesis", and what evil Mr Fenric alludes to in "The Curse of Fenric" – that Dr Who has a mysterious SECRET...

Daves Hair the wonder years via Daves Hair! August 13th, 2008 at 21:59

image After getting confused between which head he needed to have hair on in his youth Dave went off to Uni. At uni Dave let his hair down (oh the pun..), and became quite a party animal. Tired of having to get up and do his hair every day Dave decided to remove it. He borrowed a set of hair cutters and set about removing his hair with some vigour. Dave’s hair tumbled off his head and onto the floor in no time. By the time Dave had finished doing his head he was quite pleased with himself “Oh yer that will save me some time in the mornings, and I’ve heard chicks love slap heads!”. So Dave spent little time doing his hair every morning and continued to keep his hair short for the whole time he was at uni. Dave spent many a winters morning with a chilly head. Eventually he...

Olympic Time Trial via Cycling UK August 13th, 2008 at 10:02

image A recent reader to this blog, shared a great comment: ‘Riding a time trial is a bit like banging your head against a brick wall - you’re really happy when it ends’ The Olympics is a far cry from the domestic time trial scene I compete in. But, it’s still a thrill to see your sport in the Olympics. I know timetrialling is not exactly the most exciting spectator sport, but, it’s still a great test - ‘the race of truth’ Women’s Olympic Time Trial The women’s Olympic Time trial was won by Kristin Armstrong of US. Emma Pooley of Great Britain came second. It is a very well deserved medal after working hard for Nicole Cooke in the road race. Evergreen, 50 year old, Jeannie Longo just missed out on a medal by 2 seconds. (she has competed...

Chapter 18: part 6 via the price of love August 12th, 2008 at 02:01

image January 24th 1997 Two of Jenny’s colleagues came to visit. I played with the kids, leaving Sue and Emma to talk with Jenny in the conservatory. It was good to see some lively new faces, and it gave Jenny some contact with the world beyond her illness. Just as they were leaving, for a moment I caught myself looking at Emma, with her blonde, athletic good looks and her smile shining brightly through the tension all around us, and suddenly thinking, now there’s an attractive girl. It was tough for me then, in the house all day, with so much worry and far worse things looming up ahead. But I swiftly banished those thoughts as the children ran to the door to wave goodbye. The kids were really doing well, despite everything. Emily and William were in the nursery part-time, but when they...

Stonehenge Rocks Around the Clock via Coolest Gadgets August 4th, 2008 at 18:31

image Some time in the future, we will discover an ancient yet technological race of druids who will have their own version of Stonehenge. Instead of a series of stones gathered in a circle as a calendar, this strange futuristic race of druids will have a robotic arm that will rearrange a set of numbered cards to indicate the current time. The future is now. A clever designer who my source does not name has built the robot arm and the numbered cards for it. It appears that the cards are made of some simple foam with some neodymium magnets to make certain they are put back in the same place every time. If you want to see this Stonehenge in action for yourself, feel free to watch the attached YouTube video after the jump. As the video shows, it takes less than a minute to change from...

Yokohama Photo Walk via dannychoo.com - Danny Choo : Anime, Figures, Idols, Gundam, Otaku and Events from Japan August 2nd, 2008 at 13:34

image Today we go for a photo walk around Akarenga in Yokohama. Akarenga is a warehouse built by a port in Yokohama back in 1911. Until 1989 it was used as a bonded warehouse. It wasn't until 2002 when it started to be used as an event space and today its been refurbished and is full O shops and restaurants. The night time views are particularly nice. I had my SLR with me at the time but didn't know that the views were going to be nice so didn't have my tripod. There are only a few pics here but I took a few hundred in order to get these. Set the camera to rapid fire in the hopes that a few photos from each spot would turn out decent. Its really difficult without a tripod to get night shots ^^; Akarenga seemed to be popular with couples out on a date. There are no tall buildings in the...

Data Entry via Fighting Monsters July 11th, 2008 at 05:14

image All the work I do is recorded on databases. Every visit, form completed, review, assessment - even some telephone conversations (if they are over 10 minutes and can be deemed to have some kind of ‘therapeutic value’ - so not the ‘Can I arrange a time to visit?’ telephone calls.. ). These figures are all counted towards local government and NHS targets. That’s why I input on two systems - one local authority and one National Health.  Meeting targets means money - basically. In my office we even have little signs up randomly in different rooms and in the kitchen reminding us of this fact! (things to consider while making cups of tea.. ). swiveler @ flickr I find it a bit tedious but it isn’t something I have a massive issue with. I find it doesn’t...

Summer Returns via John Baker's Blog July 9th, 2008 at 11:51

I usually take a few weeks off in the summer. In the past couple of years I have turned the blog over to other writers or bloggers with the aid of a few questions, but this year it will go dark for days, sometimes weeks, at a time. Once again I shall be in Scandinavia, remote from technology for most of the time, and will only be able to contribute to the blog sporadically. There’s much to consider. My novel, Winged with Death, will be published in February 2009 and there’s quite a lot of work to be done to make myself ready for that. A boy has to peddle his book, Truman Capote told John Knowles one evening in 1960. I also have a host of books and texts to read, some of those special ones that I receive during the year and put aside, for this period when I can give them the...

Living in different time zones via (unnamed source) July 6th, 2008 at 08:57

We seem to have very different understandings about time of day in our home at the moment. Yesterday morning for example: Eldest son gets home from the School prom at 7:30am and disappears to bed Youngest son appears for breakfast at 8am saying proudly "I slept in the longest ever today - til 7:55am" Middle son, nowhere to be seen until after 10am. Just tying to work out if we could have individualised variations of British Summer time so that we might see them all at the same time :-)...

Water Boarding Christopher Hitchens via UK Libertarian Party July 5th, 2008 at 02:58

Christopher Hitchens voluntarily underwent water boarding, and writes of his experience in the August 2008 edition of Vanity Fair. Having lasted just seconds the first time, Hitchens decided to try again:And so then I said, with slightly more bravado than was justified, that I’d like to try it one more time. There was a paramedic present who checked my racing pulse and warned me about adrenaline rush. An interval was ordered, and then I felt the mask come down again. Steeling myself to remember what it had been like last time, and to learn from the previous panic attack, I fought down the first, and some of the second, wave of nausea and terror but soon found that I was an abject prisoner of my gag reflex. The interrogators would hardly have had time to ask me any questions, and I knew...

Liverpool Life It’s the time of year when Liverpool fills with twentysomethings in gowns and hats attending graduation. For a time, roughly the decade between 1996 and 2006, when I’d look them with envy even though I’d graduated, I already had a degree. Some of this is to do with a bizarre sense of not having made the most of my undergraduate years (even though a proportion of all my stories begin with ‘When I was at university first time around…’) but also because of a perpetual academic…...

2 Races 2 Days - 10 and 25 Mile Time Trial via Cycling UK June 30th, 2008 at 15:43

image At the weekend, I was racing on both Saturday and Sunday Saturday 10 miles 21:12 average speed 28.5mph 3rd / 70 Sunday 25 miles 56:57. average speed 26.2 mph (6th /60) Saturday felt good. On Sunday I was quite a bit slower probably because: Tiredness from previous day Body not as responsive early in morning Less traffic in morning. It is hard doing 2 races in 2 days. Although a 10 mile time trial is quite short; I just seemed to lack the same intensity on the next morning. I think this was as much mental tiredness as physical tiredness. It requires a real determination to race at your peak form. There was a time in the 25 mile time trial when I felt a little demoralised I was racing up hill, into the wind and my speed dropped to 20mph. Nevertheless, I was happy with the weekend...

image “So what time is the next bus then? What? Oh forget it.”;, originally uploaded by feelinglistless.I’ve been staring at this bus shelter time table for a couple of years now and I’m still dumbfounded by the sheer uselessness of its invention. One of the least exciting experiences of being chained to public transport, particularly bus services in Liverpool, is that much of the time you’re not entirely sure when your transport will arrive. Often, on this route into town at least,…...

The power of a cause via Sharpshoot June 24th, 2008 at 23:27

Something i've been thinking more and more about is what happens to performance under situations of stress. Let me share with you some examples of what I'm thinking about - these all refer to entrepreneurial endeavors1) Moving to a new city to work: So i've moved from London to San Fran. Even though i've been here for less than a day, my unfamiliarity with the local environment means that I'm trying to squeeze as much out of my waking day through work than anything else. I can't really do anything else - so that makes me want to work all the time. So situation 1: if you hire workaholic people from out of town and bring them to work then they are likely to work all day, sleep at night and then work all day again just to pass the time. Certainly this wouldn't be the case in London.2) Having...

Gazza 2008: Back Of The 80s via Anorak News June 24th, 2008 at 08:54

image MORE news form Gazza 2008, this summer’s big footy story. “GAZZA & Shezza back togezza,” says the Star’s front page in newzzzzz to thrill. “GIZZA Kiss,” says the Mirror. It’s “Gazza’s lovin’ smacker from ex-wife Sheryl.” “GAZZA’S kiss of hope,” is also the Express’s lead news story. It’s a game of two better halves going into extra time, paying the penalty for too much scoring and vowing that this time, more than any other time, this time, they’ll get it...

on Central European Time via On Liberty Now June 23rd, 2008 at 23:30

Just as Edward Heath, Conservative Prime Minster dragged the country into the EU (then the EEC), David Cameron's Conservatives, if elected into government at the next election, will do it again. This time they propose to scrap Greenwich Mean Time and make Britain adopt Central European Time, putting London in the same time zone as Paris, Madrid, and Warsaw. This would leave Portugal and Ireland as the only two countries operating on GMT or UTC. Interestingly the article says the benefits would be better trade with other CET countries, the reduction of deaths and serious injuries on the road by '450 per year' and result in a 5% reduction in electricity use. However, between 1968 and 1971 both Britain and Ireland opted to use CET by abandoning British Summer Time (a.k.a. Daylight Saving...

How to waste time in an election campaign - BIG TIME via Liberal Burblings June 22nd, 2008 at 14:14

How to waste time in an election campaign, brought to us by your ever-resourceful Conservative party: 1. Get your leader to go on the radio in the neighbouring county (why bother with the actual radio station which covers the...

Hodge podge via bollocks June 19th, 2008 at 12:08

The last few weeks seem to have flown by leaving me riding an emotional seesaw. Let me just touch on a few of the issues and you will see why I have not been as diligent in posting on my blog.1) The novel. It is finished and the next one begun. I have been researching the new novel as time allowed and at the same time sending off query letters, synopsis’ etc to a handful of literary agents. The initial ten I submitted via e-mail and I have sent out another half dozen by mail. While there has not been time to get a response from the mail inquiries eight of the ten e-mails were rejected however one has asked for additional information and so fifty pages have been sent while I anxiously await a response.2) Family and job. Louisa has been out of work for a little over two months and our...

Five ways to improve BBC’s Question Time via newsjiffy June 14th, 2008 at 01:43

I love Question Time. I love the often-angry audience, the bickering between the panelists and the gentle attack dog attempts by David Dimbleby to snare a politician. It's at its best when the non-political guest is strong, and June Sarpong did a good job last week despite being barracked by streetfighter Shirley Williams on apartheid. However, it strikes me that this program does need a very slight revamp. Here are five ideas:1. Dimbleby should have a Question Time blog where he comments on each weeks show and selects one member of the audience each week to write a review as well.2. A Youtube "Best of" Question Time should be uploaded each week, which could be embedded on the Question Time site.3. David Dimbleby should only take two questions or less before asking a panelist for his/her...

Jun ‘08 Warmup via One Phat DJ Podcast June 13th, 2008 at 12:36

image What a long “fortnight” that has been! It seems an age ago since May ‘08 Crescendo was released but that’s the beauty of the new format - occasionally I get a nice, long break between releases. That’s not to say I’ve been lounging around doing nothing. There have been literally thousands of tracks released to check out in the mean time and I’ve been a busy bee going through them all, sorting out the musical treats to grace your lovely ears. We kick off the month with quite a laid back mix, featuring some lush tracks from the likes of Bobby D’Ambrosio, Kings of Tomorrow, DJ Roland Clark, Byron Stingily, Shawn Christopher and Pepper Mashay to name but a few. We’re definitely on a Summer vibe with this beauty so I suggest you download...

7, 14, 28, 90, 56 and now 42 days … what next? via Evan's Thoughts June 11th, 2008 at 14:37

image Last year, the Government was defeated in its attempt to extend the time for detention before charge to 90 days. At the time, the time was extended to 28 days on the basis that there had been a number of cases in which the 14 day time period had almost expired before charges were laid (I seem the remember there were said to be 2 or 3 cases). Now, Gordon Brown wants to extend the 28 day time period to 42 days – having given up on 56 days and various other mooted periods. Some senior policemen and women are ‘campaigning’ for this change in the law. In campaigning – going further than simply saying I would like this power for this reason or these reasons – they are acting unconstitutionally and should be sacked … but that is another story. The people who actually make the...

Time Machine via This Is This June 6th, 2008 at 09:37

Oh man. If I invented a time machine, you know what I’d do? I wouldn’t go back to last week and buy lottery tickets or anything – no way. What I’d do is go back to the 1400s or something and show as many people as possible how to build their own time machine using locally-available materials. “Out of flux capacitors? Wait there. Er. Staye thou hither. I returneth, um… anon.” WHOOOOSH!!! And then when all the people knew how to build their time machines, I’d come back to present day and see how much the world had changed. I bet there would be a lot of schools named after me. Imagine what 500 years of time travel would have done to now. Imagine how the Weekend Songs would sound then, hey? Of course I could have changed the course of history and possibly I would cease to...

LOVE SURFACE DESIGN - GALLERY via Love Surface Design June 5th, 2008 at 09:42

image Where does the time go? It feels like only yesterday I was writing up my weekly gallery. Time definitely flies, I'm convinced of it! I am really enjoying Thursdays post, spending time looking through the groups pool and taking the time to have a look at some of the artists/designers and contributors websites and blogs. Well done everyone, you are all so talented! In the gallery this week we have a real mix of different styles and techniques. As usual I have linked to the contributors store or blog where possible. Enjoy! Interior Design 2008 by Highraff Daily Painting, 05.21.08: Drought Relief by Jess Gonacha Leaves by Sarah-Nussbaumer Time For Some Colour By...

Going to London via FerrariDave June 3rd, 2008 at 11:12

Long time, no speak! I’m back (yes, I know I’ve said that much before, but I really am this time). Enough about me being back, that’s too obvious - or else you wouldn’t be reading this post! Let’s get onto the main topic of this post, I’m going to London. No… not to buy a Heat Magazine. Me and Sam are going down there on Sunday and staying in The Royal National Hotel for two nights. We’re going to London to see the sights as it’s somewhere I’ve wanted to go visit for some time but never really had time or never got round to it when I did have time. We’ve already got two things booked for when we get there: London Eye trip Madame Tussaud’s visit If anyone who has been there before or even lives in the city would like...

25 Mile Time Trials - Times and Training via Cycling UK May 29th, 2008 at 14:25

image Next week, I will be entering my first 25 mile time trial of the year. My fastest time for a 25 mile time trial is 52.57 set 2 years ago on the A4 Aldermarston course (H25/1). Though, I would be pleased to get anywhere near that time next week. The fastest every 25 mile time trials were set by Chris Boardman - 45.57 on 29th May 1993 - Course: H25/13  Average Speed = 32.644mph Michael Hutchinson - 46.21……7 July 2002………..H25/13 Sean Yates - 46.57……28 Sept 1997……H25/13 Also worth mentioning Alf Engers who set a time of - 49 minutes and 24 seconds in 1978, averaging 30.364 (this was before modern technology like low pro and tribars) That is really fast; you have to admire anyone who can average over 31mph for a distance of 25 miles. In many ways a 25...
