The acute embarrassment Kaneria feels after offering up such filth provokes him into following up with a fierce leg break, which pitches on middle and rips past Trott's dangling bat. Gordon’s Gangsters via Guy Fawkes' blog April 19th, 2010 at 15:28

image The downfall of Steven Purcell, Labour’s disgraced former head of Glasgow council has opened up the lid on the rank corruption at the heart of the Labour Party. Three of their MPs are on trial and Purcell is now being investigated by the police for Class A drug use and “other matters”, namely to do with his alleged flogging of council contracts to his criminal mates. The Scottish coppers have started interviewing his Labour colleagues over their business deals and drugs links. Further to that the candidate selected to replace Jim Devine has been reported to the police by his own council boss for alleged offences under the Public Bodies Corrupt Practices Act. Perhaps they could share a cell. Despite being repeatedly asked on television and in the House, Gordon is...

Blowback in the Weegie Sewer. via Anna Raccoon April 17th, 2010 at 11:49

image I have for some weeks been regaling southern readers with the hitherto hidden tales of corruption, lies, graft, drug taking and gangsterism in the murky depths of Labour’s Glasgow heartlands. It has seemed a fruitless task at times. The Scottish newspapers have been terminally reticent in their reports of the efforts made by the SNP – John Mason, SNP for Glasgow East, in particular had been calling for Audit Scotland to dip their toe in the muddy waters surrounding City Building, one of the many ‘arms length’  companies set up by the snowy white Steven Purcell, which had hugely benefited Willie Haughey – a Labour donor to the tune of £11 million, a figure coincidentally identical to the donation made by Unite to the Labour Party. Now quite unexpectedly, from...

Purcell Pursuances via Anna Raccoon April 10th, 2010 at 11:35

image Glasgow City Council may have shied clear of investigating contracts drawn up by Steven Purcell but all is not quiet on that score. One of Steven’s network of gay friends is under the microscope at this moment. The Major Crimes and Terrorism group is investigating how Ruth Black, a recent convert to Labour, managed to leave her position as manager of the lesbian and gay drop-in Castro centre a mere six months before it went bankrupt for £300,000 and then remerge as head of the phoenix like new Castro centre – again a drop in centre for gay and lesbians with guaranteed funding of £50,000 a year from a committee chaired by Steven Purcell. Ruth Black, a Glasgow City Councillor herself, appointment raised some eyebrows even amongst the gay community, since the £300,000...

Britblog Roundup #262: The non-domiciled edition via Mr Eugenides March 9th, 2010 at 07:27

image Image by Beau Bo D'OrWelcome one and all to the 262nd (or so) Britblog Roundup, bringing you the best in British blogging over the past week - fortnight, in this case. Plenty to get through, as ever, so let us begin. The big political stories this past couple of weeks have centred on an Englishman, a Scotsman and a - well, a Belizean, I guess. The passing of Michael Foot saw too many tributes to list even a representative sample here, but one of the best came from perhaps an unlikely source: Daniel Hannan - albeit with a couple of digs at his successors for good value.Devil's Kitchen was not quite in the same boat, penning an acerbic commentary on the "silly sod's" legacy. Zelo Street took the opportunity to tear DK a new one.The Scotsman is, of course, Steven Purcell, the erstwhile leader...

Gordon’s Scottish Snowstorm via Guy Fawkes' blog March 7th, 2010 at 17:02

image Whoever says  Scottish politics is dull might want to take a look at last week’s unravelling saga around Labour controlled Glasgow City Council. Who would have thought when Gordon visited a key ally two  Thursday’s ago that within a week, one of Scotland’s up and coming politicos would have attempted suicide, a police investigation would link the same man, Glasgow’s most senior politician, to major organised drug crime and an 18-year-old Labour activist would be end up dead outside the city’s Council Chambers. As ever Gordon is pulling a Macavity on this one. Steven Purcell was talked about as the saviour of the Scottish Labour Party, its brightest young star, he was tipped as a future First Minister.  However if Purcell ever wanted a return...

Steven Purcell, he’s buggered off! via The Lone Voice March 6th, 2010 at 14:18

image TROUBLED council chief Steven Purcell sensationally fled Scotland last night. He is jetting abroad to escape the pressure after a dramatic week which saw him quit as leader of Glasgow council. Sources close to Purcell said he won't return for up to a year. Earlier yesterday, Purcell followed up his decision to quit as £60,000-a-year leader of Scotland's biggest local authority by standing down as a councillor. Purcell spent some time at the Castle Craig rehab clinic in the Borders after he quit as council chief . He disappeared from the clinic on Sunday but turned up again soon afterwards. A source close to Purcell said: "Steven has always had an interest in the southern hemisphere and it is thought he might be spending some time...

image The Curse of the One-Eyed Son of the Manse will not go away. Pharma big boys AstraZenca were very chuffed when Gordon welcomed their chairman as one of Britain’s Business Ambassadors three months ago. This was never going to go well. The smile was soon wiped off their face when Mr Ambassador fired 2,200 of his staff this week. The curse was particularly powerful in north of the border. Last Thursday Gordon shared the top table at a Labour Party fund-raiser in Glasgow with the leader of the council, the flamboyant “high-flyer” Steven Purcell.  Colleagues say he was buzzing at the party.  The next morning his career was over.  Purcell mysteriously cancelled meetings before eventually clearing his whole diary and promptly resigned citing “stress“. He then...

Turandot’s missing piece via The Guardian World News October 2nd, 2009 at 21:30

On the eve of his new ENO production of Turandot, Rupert Goold explains the joys of giving Puccini's great unfinished opera an endingLucy Prebble, outrageously talented, outrageously young, rings me to ask when we will be able to work in the cuts and dialogue changes she has made since our production of her play Enron opened at the Royal Court in London. Despite the show's success, she's keen to make changes before we transfer to the Noel Coward theatre in January. I say I'll see what I can do, but right now I have to further correct the final act of my own adaptation of Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author, showing at the Bristol Old Vic prior to a national tour. The ending has always been tricky, but hopefully my changes will make a difference.Sometimes finishing a...

Labour play the SNP’s territorial game over the budget via doctorvee September 19th, 2009 at 20:22

What a stooshie there is over the Scottish budget and John Swinney’s plan to scrap the Glasgow Airport Rail Link. I have found the reaction from Labour very interesting. Their strategy appears to be to attempt to paint it as an anti-Glasgow policy from an Edinburgh-centric party. Jeff thought that Steven Purcell may have jumped the gun by describing the SNP’s budget proposals as “anti-Glasgow”. But if he did, Labour certainly weren’t embarrassed about it, and enthusiastically jumped on the bandwagon. Already during the budget debate Margaret Curran had asked a pointed question about just what was in the budget for Glasgow. Separate parts of Labour soon latched on to the idea. For instance, Tom Harris was very quick to tweet the following: “Gutted by the...
