As a freelancer, I've got more than a few jobs through Jobserve. In the past, they used to just post email addresses of the agents who were advertising the roles, but recently they've got cleverer than that. They now publish an email address that goes to the Jobserve servers before being passed on to the agent. It's clever, because they now know what sort of jobs you are applying for and can use that knowledge to suggest other similar jobs that you might be interested in.Except it doesn't really seem to be working. I've started getting these recommendation from Jobserve. They actually come from a system called "Jobserve Alchemy". I got one just now. It says "From the information you have registered with on JobServe and your recent application activity on JobServe you appear to closely...

How many on the Net? via NightHawk July 24th, 2008 at 20:50

According to IDC's Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast, a quarter of the global population - that's 1.4 billion people - will regularly use the internet during 2008. So it looks like that Internet thingy is here to say. Looking at growth prospects, it is suggested that the number of Net users is set to jump to 1.9 billion over the next four years, bringing access to roughly 30% of the world's population. Net-enabled mobile devices will help drive the global online trend, surpassing the desktop PC as the primary means of accessing the internet by 2012 (I'm already accessing the Net on my iPhone as well as PC). The US update via The Croydonian July 23rd, 2008 at 14:04

Zogby's polling suggests that the best VP candidate for Obama is Colin Powell, with him delivering a net positive of 32% more likely to vote Dem, compared to a net 5% for Hillary Clinton. Bill Richardson is the only other to give a net boost, at 5%. Evan Bayh, Kathleen Sebelius and Tim Kaine (who?) are net negative of 4-6%. I suspect that the Powell effect is exagerrated due to a reluctance on the part of pollees to snub an all black ticket. Given that CP would not run for the Big One, I doubt he would want to be the younger man's spear carrier, as after all, 'The vice-presidency isn't worth a pitcher of warm [urine]' as John Nance Garner once put it.Over at GOP HQ, McCain's best bets are Romney at +15% and Huckabee at +14%. Joe Lieberman does little at +3%. Others are net...

Net neutrality and the unions via Eric Lee June 16th, 2008 at 17:08

One of Canada's largest unions, the 340,000 member National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), has joined the battle to defend net neutrality. The fact that most trade unionists won't even understand what that means underlines how significant NUPGE's decision actually is. Until now, all Internet traffic has been treated equally by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). That means that whether you're visiting the website of your union or your employer, your government or local community organization, your request to view a web page (or download a video) are treated the same. And the same goes for email -- emails sent by the largest global corporations are treated the same as emails sent by the smallest dissident groups. But lately, some ISPs have begun complaining that...

Server Meltdown Part Four - Where The NIC Hates You via Random Thoughts April 20th, 2008 at 09:05

It appears from reading various threads over the net that the Linux sky2 driver in conjunction with the Marvell 88E8056 Gigabit ethernet controller results in a steamy pile of poo. I can confirm that this is indeed the case. Again following up from my previous posts, the next step in home linux server resurrection was to attempt to install Ubuntu 7.10 ×64 edition on my shiny new machine. This didn't get very far. A boot from CD ended up in a wedged machine no matter how I tried to run the install. Hmmm, I think I'll go back to the trusty Debian distribution. I downloaded the latest stable (Etchy) net install disk. Boot. Joy! It all runs. Except the net card. Lots of kernel errors regarding the ethernet driver followed by a fatal crash. Suck. Maybe I'll try Lenny, the "in test"...

More aspnet_regiis Goodness - this time on Vista via nerd. April 18th, 2008 at 19:31

Some time ago I published a blog describing the use of a command line tool called aspnet_regiis.exe to overcome a “Server Application Unavailable” message when I was trying to get ASP.NET working on IIS 6 on Windows XP. Just now I’ve used the same tool to fix a similar (I think) problem on IIS7 on Vista. I was trying to get some practice with ASP.NET. I’ve already got IIS7 and I’ve already got the .NET Framework 2.0 installed. However it seemed, again, that IIS wasn’t aware of the Framework’s existence. When I tried to browse to a simple Hello World page I was greeted with an HTTP 404 (404.3 to be precise) informing me that: “The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the extension configuration. If the page is a script, add...

Net Etiquette 1: Click HERE via James's Weblog April 7th, 2008 at 14:04

Websites / blogs / e-mails / forums are increasingly a part of modern life. One side-effect is information overload. There are ways in which people can contribute to the net that help with this. There are ways that do not help. This is the first of a series of short posts that plead for considerate net use. I’m sure nobody is deliberately obstructive in any of the ways I will outline. In which case, people need to point out what consitutes good etiquette and why – otherwise considerate people will continue making cyberspace more difficult to navigate – without realising it.  … read more »...

Net Audio - Pay Per Play via Ask Sir Mortimer February 11th, 2008 at 20:35

You may have read a previous post where I talked about the concept of pay per play, this was where and audio advertisement would play for five seconds to every new visitor to a web site. This was to be an alternative to the standard page to display type of advertisements you see all over the Internet today. The people behind pay per play our company called Net audio, which have been heavily marketing/overselling the opportunity, not always the most white hat manner. When I joined the program I quickly found out that there was an element of wanting to grow the network quickly without actually having any content in place. When I logged into the program manager there was a message infant to me which appeared to be incurred reaching marketing/spamming in a roundabout way. The message said...
