Carnivorous gadgets kill insects for power via Odd News | newslite.tv July 2nd, 2009 at 14:08

image Designers are working on a range of household gadgets which power themselves by catching and killing insects.Auger-loizeau and Alex Zivanovic have started work on the devices which include a lamp and clock. They say the tech - which would be suited to a Bond villains lair - is powered by special fuel cells which are able to produce electricity by processing the bodies of flies. While I quite like the idea of a fly zapping lamp, I think their "mousetrap coffee table robot" says more about the cleanliness of the designers home than anything else.  Speaking of their "Lampshade robot" the designers say: "Flies and moths are naturally attracted to light. This lamp shade has holes based on the form of the pitcher plant enabling access for the insects but no escape. "Eventually they...

Carnivorous Robot: “Pleased to Eat You” via Fish and Chimps: PETA Europe's Blog June 30th, 2009 at 17:43

image I’ll take a chance on betting that I’m not the only one who secretly wonders what will happen when the robots take over (I Robot anyone?), but I’m certainly hoping it has nothing to do with these guys. These bloodthirsty, gut-wrenching robots, designed by UK-based designers James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau thrive on killing and liquidizing flies and mice, whilst serving the purpose of… well, not much at all really. See, these scientists believe that rather than glancing down at our watch, we’d prefer to have a clock run by giant machine that literally squeezes the life out of unsuspecting insects. Apparently, the flies “fall into the microbial fuel cell beneath, where bacteria digest the fly and cause chemical changes that the cell can extract power...

Fly Catching LED Clock via Geeky Gadgets June 30th, 2009 at 14:43

image The Fly Catching LED Clock is the work of British designers Jimmy Loizeau and James Auger, the clock collects insects on a sticky roller which is covered in fly paper, the dead flies are then dropped into a microbial fuel cell. The dead flies are then digested by bacteria, and the chemical changes are used by the microbial fuel cell to power the LED clock, it certainly sounds very interesting, who knew flies could be so useful. Isophone concept lets you take phone calls in sensory deprivation via Coolest Gadgets February 9th, 2009 at 19:54

image So what is it that we are looking at here? Is it some sort of high tech dunking test to see if someone is a witch? Or is it some rejected concept for the Cone of Silence for last summer’s Get Smart movie? Would you believe it is a telecommunications device that blocks out all peripheral sensory distractions? This is exactly what the Isophone is designed to do, keeping your head above water as your body floats. So there is nothing to distract you from your precious phone calls as your body is in a sensory deprivation tank. Okay, here’s the problem that I have with this particular device: the phone calls that would require this level of concentration would probably require me to take notes. How am I to take notes when my hands are underwater? I’m going to need a whiteboard and...

The Mousetrap Coffee Table via Coolest Gadgets February 3rd, 2009 at 18:00

image This has got to be the most disturbing way to catch mice I’ve ever seen.  It doesn’t mutilate them or rip them into little pieces.  Which, admittedly would be horrific as well.  No, instead it puts the caught mouse on display, directly in your living room.  I’m sure you’ll have no problem at all getting guests to keep their visits short with this thing lying around.  I admit, it is an interesting concept, but I don’t really want a mouse watching me while I try to curl up on the couch and watch a movie. Basically, there is a hole in one of the legs, which the mouse will likely use trying to reach leftover crumbs that are on the surface of the table.  When they do crawl in, it activates a motion sensor that will then trap the mouse inside of your...
