Some clever hackers have come up with a new way to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS, called the iDongle. The iDongle is a hardware jailbreak for you iPhone and it will work with the iPhone OS 3.1 or later.
It just plugs into the 30 pin connector on the bottom of your iPhone, and according to the guys who made it they will be updating the software for future releases of the iPhone OS.
The iDongle can be updated by plugging it into a USB port. One thing though whilst it will jailbreak you iPhone it wont unlock it from your network provider. You can find out more details here.

We have seen quite a few different iPhone 3G and 3GS mods here at Geeky Gadgets, most of them are new housing for your iPhone covered in diamonds and gold and are going to set you back a fair amount of cash.
One iPhone owner, Martin Schrotz decided he didn’t like the plastic casing on the back of his iPhone 3GS so he set out to re-design it. Martin spent over three months coming up with the final version, he tried it aluminum but that didn’t work out so well, so he came up with this awesome titanium design.
Martin measured the iPhone casing digitally and then drew the cover in CAD. The final case ins constructed from titanium alloy, and this is by far the coolest iPhone mod we have seen.
Personally I think Martin should start selling these replacement cases for the iPhone...

Everyone’s seen an iPhone, and most people want one, but can you tell the difference between an iPhone 3G and an iPhone 3GS? The answer is most certainly no; they look identical to each other and are no different to the naked eye. Once you’ve used an iPhone 3GS, however, you’ll realise just how different it is.
It’s been around 6 months since the iPhone 3GS was released and at the time many people thought that it was somewhat of a low-key upgrade from the iPhone 3G, certainly it was more of an evolution than a revolution, especially when you consider what some of the 3rd generation iPhone rumours that had been going around prior to Apple’s announcement in which they introduced us to the iPhone 3GS.
So what can be added to our previous review of the iPhone 3G? Well...

So you’ve gotten yourself a brand new iPhone 3GS and think that it is the bee’s knees – well here’s news for you. It isn’t exactly the best device out there, as there still isn’t anything which can do everything well, and the iPhone 3GS is no exception. One of its major weaknesses would be less-than-satisfactory sound quality when recording, which is why the new Flexible Mini Capsule Microphone from Brando was introduced – it is highly flexible, allowing you to point the microphone on its swiveling base to receive sound from any direction, and doing so with a 25+ dB gain for enhanced sound clarity and quality. Compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G and iPod Nano 4G, you will be able to pick up this nifty device for $14.

To me this is very plausible.
It seems that Apple may be dropping the 8gb iPhone 3G in favour of a similarly memoried 3Gs.
A forum user on the German ‘apfeltalk‘ ordered a regular refurbed 8GB iPhone 3G and that’s exactly what he got.
But – the interesting thing was that the packaging was for an 8GB version of the latest model, the 3GS!
As everyone here surely knows – you can only get the 3Gs in 16GB and 32GB versions. This means an unlikely typo on the packaging or Apple has got their new boxes all mixed up with the outgoing stock – ooopsy!
User .David commented on the forums (translated via Google Translate):
“Seems to be an iPhone 3G (back and no compass, FW) 3.0.1 on it. However, the packaging is clearly designed for an iPhone 3G [S] 8GB....

We have see quite a few different accessories for the iPhone 3GS that are designed to help you record video, the latest one is the OWLE iPhone Video Mount.
The OWLE iPhone Video Mount is made from anodized aluminum, and it comes with a standard 37mm lens threading, as well as a 0.45x wide angle/macro combination lens, and a mini boom microphone.
Now the OWLE iPhone Video/Rig solves that problem using anodized billet aluminum, a mini boom-mic and a wide angle lens. Simply nestle your iPod inside the metal and silicone case of the OWLE and get ready to shoot the best iPhone video you’ve ever seen. Still shots turn out great as well.
We are not sure if the OWLE iPhone Video Mount will actually improve the video quality on your iPhone 3GS, but it will certainly look the part.

The latest Apple [AAPL] rumor doing the rounds is that AT&T are going to be selling an 8GB version of the iPhone 3GS just before Christmas.
Currently the only 8GB iPhone available is the 3G, and the iPhone 3GS is available in 16GB and 32GB version, by launching an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99, AT &T may be able to get customers who would have been interested in the new $99 DROID Eris.
As usual with all Apple rumors, it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, mind you the BGR usually gets these things right so who knows, we may see a $99 8GB iPhone 3GS on AT&T before Christmas.

A developer called Zodttd is working on an N64 emulator for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3Gs might just have enough power to run N64 games, and according to the developer it will only work on the iPhone 3GS and latest iPod Toich, which have the GPU and CPU and OpenGLES 2.0 support.
Some of the high end N64 titles might not run on the emulator, as the developer hasn’t decided how the controls are going to work for various games.
It certainly will be interesting to see how it turns out once it has been developed, it would be great to play N64 games on the iPhone.

The other day we reported that Apple [AAPL] was shipping their latest iPhone 3GS with a new bootrom update which would effectively stop the iPhone 3GS being jailbroken for the moment.
The good news is that according to Eric McDonald from the iPhone Dev team, any iPhone 3GS with the new bootrom can still be jailbroken, and that the new bootrom only causes a temporary inconvenience.
According to Eric McDonald the new bootrom interferes with the 24kpwn exploit that was used to previously jialbreak the iPhone and that it will only make the iPhone difficult to start up after it shuts down.
To reboot the iPhone you will need to plug it into your PC or Mac, so basically if your iPhone 3GS runs out of power or you shut it down it with need to be tethered for it to turn back on again.

Here’s an interesting topic, Apple have reportedly started shipping the iPhone 3GS with a new botroom that makes it impossible to jailbreak the handset.
Jailbreaking the iPhone has always been a problem ever since it’s initial release. It seems now though that Apple have finally decided to do something about it and this is what they’ve done!

iPhone 3GS….Now Shipped Immune To Jailbreaking! is a post from: UK Gadget and Tech News, Reviews and Shopping Site - Gaj-It.com...

It looks like Apple is upping its game in an attempt to stop the iPhone being jailbroken, iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd has confirmed that Apple are shipping the iPhone 3GS with a bootrom update, iBoot-359.3.2 which will stop the iPhone 3Gs being jailbroken for the moment.
The bootrom update is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit that is used by the Dev Team and other jailbreakers to jailbreak the iPhone.
I am sure it won’t be long before we see a solution from either the iPhone Dev Team or from George Hotz, who recently brought us the Blackra1n iPhone jailbreak.

The iPhone Dev team has released the latest version of their iPhone Pwnage Tool 3.1.3.
Pwnage Tool 3.1.3 will let your upgrade your iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 2G to iPhone firmware 3.1, but only if you are using a custom jailbreak on your iPhone 3GS with firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1.
The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 pre-installed and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.
If you have already upgraded to version 3.1, you wont be able to Jailbreak your iPhone with the Pwnage Tool 3.1.3, you will have to wait until the iPhone Dev team releases the next version.

The days of O2’s exclusivity on Apple’s iPhone has always been assumed to be numbered.
Today that day seems to have arrived as Orange has officially confirmed it will be offering the iPhone 3GS online and in its stores later this year.
This isn’t really a shock as I reported that Orange had been in talks back in May 2008 regarding the iPhone 3G.
Prices, tariffs and availability dates are yet to be announced but Orange has launched a Web site for people to register their interest in the meantime, at orange.co.uk/iPhone.
The 3G coverage maps (see in the gallery) were published by Ofcom and highlighted its reason for giving O2 a slap on the wrist and warning the network that its 3G licence could be revoked if it didn’t sort itself out.

Good news everyone! The iPhone’s exclusivity deal with O2 is over and we’ll be seeing the iPhone available on the Orange network before the end of the year!
Orange have announced that they now have an agreement with Apple to offer the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS to Orange customers later this year in 28 countries and territories. Within the UK they will be sold via all direct Orange channels including Orange shops, the Orange website, and Orange telesales, in addition to other selected high street partners.
This looks like a great sign of things to come; we’ve not got any details on pricing, tariffs or dates when the Orange iPhones will be available, but I’m sure this will make for a great present for Christmas 2009 for many people who have been wanting an iPhone,...

In there Summer there were all manner of rumours concerning the iPhone; specifically, that O2 would lose exclusivity and that both Orange and T-Mobile would pick up the 3G handset to sell, although O2 were expected to retain rights to the newer 3GS. It was more than a rumour according to trade publications – we found this feature in a copy of Mobile Today:
But today Orange have confirmed they will be selling the iPhone 3GS, massively diminishing O2’s clout in the market. Obviously T-Mobile haven’t announced they’re picking the handset up, since they’re merging with Orange anyway. There are no pricing details or even a release date yet, just a tantalising page on the Orange website for you to register your interest:

We have seen the many ways of unofficially unlocking your iPhone 3G like redsn0w, it seems like one lucky iPhone owner managed to get his iPhone 3G unlocked by Apple.
The iPhone user in question lives in Finland and his iPhone was on the Sonera network, who let users buy themselves out of their 3G contract in Finland when the iPhone 3GS was released.
And now I’ve discovered that Sonera is also happy to lend a helping hand in unlocking your old iPhone 3G. When the 3G was released last year, Sonera customers had to sign up for a two-year contract. When upgrading to the iPhone 3GS, those same customers are given the option to pay off the remainder of their original 3G contract. Paying off the contract, and thus completing the two years prematurely, entitles the customer to have their...
