Not by a politician, but by a physicist - Alan Scott from Wisconsin. It's worth listening for seven minutes to hear his sober non-partisan analysis.

Hmmmmm. I celebrate the big Five-Oh next Tuesday ,so I'm going to be a bit self-indulgent over the next few days and post stuff about a few personal favourites.
To accentuate the alliteration of "Five Days Before Fifty Years" , I'll begin with a Favourite Film - "Frequency"
It's underated, perhaps because it's a Science Fiction / Thriller crossover that is really a film about family bonds....

As the US Presidential election heads towards a climax - or at least an ending - an increasingly desperate Republican hopeful John McCain used the final televised debate between the candidates to try and unsettle his Democratic opponent, Barack Obama (both pictured above). With a series of attacks, McCain accused Obama variously of threatening to weigh down Americans with new taxes, waging a historically negative campaign and taking extremist positions on abortion. But by and large Obama seemed to keep his cool. The ferocity of Mr McCain’s assaults, fuelled by his underdog status according to numerous new polls, seemed to many Europeans, including myself, to have taken their toll on the older candidate - certainly judging by the above picture. Only the race card left now !

From last July - American Trade Union leader Richard Trumka makes the most memorable speech I've heard in a long time, as he attacks racism against Barack Obama.

Now, I’m quite a fan of the voice of random weirdness, like Federico Fellini movies and cereal boxes in another language. I like stuff that makes you smile even though you’re not entirely sure what at. Basically anything that actually makes you exclaim out loud like a cartoon character with copious amounts of punctuation marks above their head.
So when we came across this video from Samsung, we thought it was only appropriate to share the strange. Crownfish involves a penguin, a beauty queen, a life raft and of course, a crownfish. With these ingredients you can only have a recipe for black forest gateaux oddity.
The penguin will dance on the tombstone of your serrated psyche.

NEW VIDEO - ‘HELP GORDON BROWN, PART 2′
Call me sentimental if you must, but since the present prime minister and I share a high regard for the Beatles, I have recently put together a couple of videos to try to help poor old Gordon.
Here’s the earlier one.
Beatles HELP Gordon Brown, Part 1
Pity for Mr Brown that some of their song lyrics sound so prescient.
If you’d rather be reminded of the halcyon days when politics was more optimistic, watch these two.

Last Saturday Ecomonkey joined a group of people determined to spread a little love on London's underground. The project is called Underground Smile and does exactly what it says on the t-shirt. You may have seen us out and about, distributing stickers in return for a smile and t-shirts to those who engaged our attention and were clearly enjoying the ride! We raised a few looks of confusion, lots and lots of smiles and even, get this - laughter! Yes, it's true - people were LAUGHING on the tube!!Underground Smile emanated from the brilliant mind of Suzanne Morris who whilst studying for a Landmark course, devised a scheme to help overcome her fear of travelling by London tube in rush-hour. Suzanne felt that if the atmosphere on the underground were more sociable and friendly she might not...
Who here hasn't, at one time or another, watched something on "YouTube"?
Can you believe this? Can you? Can you comprehend it? Can you?
Google must divulge YouTube log.
Google must divulge the viewing habits of every user who has ever
watched any video on YouTube, a US court has ruled.
The ruling comes as part of Google's legal battle with Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement....
Just watch this. Pure joy:

This is kind of weird, especially the way she looks the the poeple behind the glass in the end. Is it inevitable that my favourite music is still mostly from the 70s and 80s ?
I joined Facebook last week and when doing the music quiz on ilike I had to listen to a lot of bands I'd barely heard of before.
My favourite is definitely Bowling For Soup. Their '1985' is ironically enough, about someone whose musical tastes, and indeed entire dreams, are still trapped in the 1980s (devotees of...

This got to no 54 in 1978 in the UK chart! Does anyone other than me remember it?...
No political relevance, just some rather special music that I felt like blogging about tonight.
The Korgis were an underated band from the 80s. Their first hit "If I Had You" was credited to their frontman James Warren and Rachmaninoff. They could show a certain delicate wit, as in this lyric from their track "O Maxine":
"O Maxine,
Don't ever leave me

For me, You Tube is a goldmine of music videos that I can blog when I am too tired to post , if I have nothing to say, or if I just want to put up a video of a favourite musician. Copyright issues aside, You Tube should be a harmless entertainment medium. It should not be banned (as it was recently in Thailand) and unless someone posts a criminal act it should;d not land anyone in prison. Criticising an exam system does not in my view constitute a criminal act, but then I am not the Turkish state! Last year , a Turkish teenager made a video of himself lip-synching a song that blasted Turkey's university entrance system and put it on YouTube. Unfortunately the video did not go down well with the Turkish authorities. Deli, the band that released the song, faces charges of...

In any interesting move today, and I believe the first of its kind, the BBC has announced that it has made a deal with YouTube to distribute its content on three YouTube channels. You can find the full announcement on the BBC website.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that they’ll be scrapping the TV license anytime soon, as it happens it’s only snippets rather than full programmes – in fact, if anything, it really isn’t aimed at a UK audience, as evidenced by the fact that one of the 3 channels will not even be available to UK residents!
The original article terms the as “groundbreaking and controversial” - while I don’t know that it really goes that far, one thing is clear. When an organisation like the BBC decides to employ online and social networking...

As reported last week, Google has decided that spending $1.65bn would be a good idea to acquire You Tube.
Clearly, Google thinks this is a good idea, I would imagine that the founders of You Tube would agree and no doubt there are some copyright lawyers rubbing their hands in glee that they have a target with remarkably deep pockets to go after on behalf of all the copyrighted videos that somehow find their way onto the You Tube site.
But just what makes You Tube so attractive when Google, along with the other major players in the sector, have their own products. Well, clearly the visitor levels to the site are a major part of this together with their spending potential for online advertising which is, let’s face it, Google’s primary source of income. But is that it?...
