HYSTERICAL UK MEDIA NOW INFLATE THE THREAT OF DEFLATION via CALEDONIAN COMMENT November 19th, 2008 at 00:01

image UK inflation tumbled at a record pace in October to 4.5 %, down from the 16-year peak of 5.2 % in September, official figures showed yesterday. A sharp fall in transport costs, coupled with lower fuel and food prices, helped to push down the Consumer Price Index to the lowest rate since July. Core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, also fell from 2.2 % to 1.9 %, indicating that retailers are cutting prices in a bid to attract consumers into the shops as the British economy head towards recession. The bigger-than-expected fall in inflation helps to explain the Bank of England’s dramatic 1.5 % rate cut earlier this month as, until now, the rate-setting Monetary Policy Committee hag been concerned about entrenching inflation in the economy if it cut rates too...

The BNP leak via tygerland.net November 18th, 2008 at 21:34

For the record. It will surprise no-one that I’m not on the BNP list. As someone who’s liberal to a fault, I think it’s fair to say that the party is run by a group of hateful fucktards. That said, whoever leaked the list online, should be arrested for incitement to violence - or whatever else the police can pin on them. One’s politics, however hateful and vindictive, should never be reason for violence. Whoever leaked this list must know of the damage it would do to the people featured on this list - many of whom, I’m sure, are frustrated with British politics, rather than being conscious racists or bigots. I do hope this story will fizzle out without...

The Liberal Principle via Cicero's Songs November 18th, 2008 at 09:55

The return of Mandelson to British politics has certainly increased the shrillness factor. Despite pledges of bi-partisanship in "facing this grave crisis", within a few weeks we are back to business as usual. Despite the blatant culpability of Gordon Brown- "no return to boom and bust" now sounds like a slightly off-colour Carry-On joke- the Conservatives have struggled to inflict further damage on the Labour government. There has been much discussion- not least amongst Conservatives- about why this could be. Some have pointed the finger at George Osborne. Certainly he has been guilty of some serious personal misjudgements- not least over the Corfu affair. It is also true that the timbre of his voice and his rather effete demeanour bring out the worst in even the least sensitive class...

Daily Mail calls for Britain to resign via The Stupid Times November 17th, 2008 at 22:52

image The Daily Mail newspaper has decided that everyone in the UK should resign over various crises. From the Credit Crunch, the Ross/Brand telephone scandal, to failing local government services, Mail columnists led by Melanie Phillips have decided that it is time us all to fall on our swords. In an opinion piece in Monday's paper, Phillips explained that Britain's position has become untenable."We are all responsible for the mistakes of the 1960s generation. Gays, single mothers and immigrants are mostly to blame of course, but we are perhaps equally to blame for not spitting at them in the street anymore and allowing them to live their sordid, filthy lives in an atmosphere of peace and tolerance. Therefore it is now the duty of every one in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to...

Mythical Beatles track latest part of dead horse to be flogged via The Stupid Times November 17th, 2008 at 12:25

Sir Paul McCartney is set to pick some more flesh off the bones of his former band with the release of ‘Carnival of Light’ a 14 minute jam recorded in 1967 that John Lennon and George Harrison thought was shit. McCartney, who hasn’t written a decent song since the early 1970s, has spoken to the media about the song in order to sell a few extra Beatles albums at Christmas, in the absence of a re-packaged “Best Of” this year containing all the same songs as the others. Walking along the street with his trademark man boobs and thumbs on display, the 66 year old one trick pony smiled and waved at reporters on his way to the bank to draw out some of his hundreds of millions of pounds. “It’s really cool man,” he told us. “This was just something we did for a laugh when we...
