Sony PS3 Move not Arc – Motion Controlling Wand gets Named and Shown off via GadgetyNews.com March 11th, 2010 at 14:46

image Sony has been showing off its Nintendo Wii baiting motion controller. They’ve also officially named it: PlayStation Move. Sony created a bit of a stir at the PlayStation presentation held at the Games Developer Conference in San Francisco. The naming of the Move may have lost a number of people money if they’d been betting on Sony naming the motion controller Arc. The PlayStation Move requires the use of a wand-like device a bit like a rounded Wiimote, with Sony’s Eye camera used as the sensor to track your movements – Sony are bragging that it’s the ‘most precise’ and ultra-sensory device of its kind. The good thing is that the Move can be integrated into more established PS3 titles – games of choice for underling this was...

Hands on With Sony Ericsson’s Latest – Two World’s Smallest Titles via GadgetyNews.com February 16th, 2010 at 22:08

image I’ve had a gadgety grope of Sony Ericsson’s latest. I’m thankful that I’ve managed this as no matter how good the press releases are they don’t really do tech much justice and, being cynical, I can’t always believe what I’m told. The other thing I hadn’t realised before having a poke around is that SE have also managed a couple of ‘worlds smallest’s’. Not only is the Xperia Mini the smallest Android phone the Vivaz grabs the title of the world’s smallest HD recording phone. Nice So, what can I say about the new range. Well, the Xperia is the one to go for if you’re a media junky. The flagship X10 packs an 8.1 megapixel camera with a 16x digital zoom and auto focus, as well as video recording. It’s...

HTC Legend – Apple Flavoured Android? via GadgetyNews.com February 16th, 2010 at 13:49

image HTC have been busy and have unveiled a number of new mobiles at the MWC. Thing is that, in my opinion, none of them look as lovely as the HTC Legend. The body is carved from a single piece of aluminum – Mmmmm….. unibody….. I hope Apple are watching! Under that gorgeous hood purrs Android 2.1 wrapped up in HTC Sense. It’s fitted with a 3.2 inch capacitive AMOLED screen with a res of 320 x 480 pixels. The Legend sports a 5.0 megapixel snapper that’s paired up with autofocus and flash. This is all pushed along by a 600 MHz processor and 512MB ROM and 384MB of RAM. There’s a microSD slot to increase it’s capacity as well as the now expected Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. I’m particularly digging this “helicopter view”. Perhaps...

Sony Ericsson Aspen Announced – GreenHeart Business Phone via GadgetyNews.com February 2nd, 2010 at 11:20

image Today sees the announcement of the new Sony Ericsson Aspen. SE’s latest business blower joins the rest of its eco-friends in the GreenHeart range. Being aimed at the busy business-person you get a QWERTY-board for firing off emails and a touchscreen to ease the multi-tasking. You’re able to organise and adapt panels to change during the day and use Slide View for quick access to common features. The user will also be able to view and edit office files easily with one touch operation and jump onto the web in one click. Your company will rest a little easier after those ‘business lunches’ as, should the handest be left in the back of a cab after that liquid lunch, Microsoft’s MyPhone service will be able to remotely erase phone data. “Sony Ericsson Aspen™...

Adobe Flash Coming to iPhone – Bringing 2 Million Developers With it via GadgetyNews.com January 11th, 2010 at 14:06

image Apple keeps holding Flash away from its flagship phone even though it seems that Adobe keeps asking nicely to join the party. It sounds like this may change soon and with Flash comes Adobe’s 2 Million or so Flash Developers and they’re all heading towards the iPhone – whether Apple wants them or not! The next version of Adobe’s Flash developer tools, Creative Suite 5 (currently in private beta), will include a “Packager for iPhone” app which will automatically convert any Flash app into an iPhone app. So while Flash apps won’t run on the iPhone, any Flash app can easily be converted into an iPhone app. (Microsoft is taking a similar approach with Silverlight). This is a bigger deal than many people appreciate. As you know, most video on the Web (YouTube,...

Polaroid Instant Cameras Return With the PIC-1000 via GadgetyNews.com January 10th, 2010 at 19:44

image Polaroid has confirmed its come-back with the promise of releasing a new Polaroid instant camera later this year. There’s been a campaign and the Impossible Project rallied to keep the format alive by actually buying a Polaroid Film factory and promised us a new camera this year. And here it is. The new camera will come in three colours – silver, black and faux wood and offer fans of the romanticised format to relive those glory days. Other points are a tad sketchy but I’m guessing that these new cameras will follow the tried-and-tested designs of old. Polaroid says that the new PIC-1000 will cost around £60. Mad Catz Cyborg Gaming Mouse Range – Prices and Details via GadgetyNews.com January 6th, 2010 at 21:53

image I was so tempted just to post the pictures and see if anyone could work out what the heck this thing was. Then the more I looked the more it became obvious. It’s examples of the new Mad Catz Cyborg mouse – although I still can’t guess what all the buttons and bolts do. The Mad Catz USB Cyborg mice have pretty much everything a gamer needs. You get adjustable ergonomics/weights and DPIs up to 5600 and they’re out in Summer. “Cyborg is best known for ergonomic and fully adjustable flight sticks, gaming mice and keyboards. For the first time ever on a mouse, the key points of contact between the gamer’s hand and the mouse are fully adjustable...

Google Nexus One is Here and so is the Google Store to Sell it! via GadgetyNews.com January 5th, 2010 at 20:45

image When Google decided to sell their own Android blower, the Nexus One, almost as many column inches were given to how they’d do this as were given to the actual handset. Well, they’ve opened a new store, from which they plan to sell Android phones from a variety of carriers and manufacturers. This will be a one-stop-shop for your choice of Android mobile. There’s nothing really new about Google.com/phone but by bringing all those phones together it shows that Google may have been getting concerned about having bits of Android dotted about the place. Having it all centralised should strengthen the brand identity as well as making the punters life a little easier. The Nexus One has obviously gone all official now and the pricing seems to follow a familiar format: $180 on...

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 – Use as a Netbook at Home and Take Just the Screen On The Road via GadgetyNews.com January 5th, 2010 at 19:40

image For those that want to stay hip with the latest fashions Lenovo bring you the IdeaPad U1. Everyone seems to be talking about tablets and/or netbooks – Boom! The IdeaPad U1 is both! You can use it as an Intel Core Duo SU processored Windows 7 netbook who’s spec includes 4GB of RAM, 2 USB ports, HDMI and a 4-in-1 memory reader. But when it’s all about tablet computing, say, running a version of Linux – just hoik the screen from the IdeaPad U1’s body. As easy as that. The tablet section of the IdeaPad U1 has a Qualcomm ARM Snapdragon chip and 512MB of RAM all of its own. There’s even a 1.3MP webcam! It’s gotta be more useful than just being a German bus seat. The clever 2-in-1 Lenovo IdeaPad U1 will cost somewhere around the $1000 mark when it shows...

Apple Tablet iSlate Confirmed – 10.1 Inch Screened iPhone via GadgetyNews.com January 2nd, 2010 at 15:08

image Ok – so none of the following iSlate news is particularly new but the fact that it comes from a very reliable and connected source makes this type-worthy. Kai-fu Lee, ex-president of Google China, is well hooked up with Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn. He couldn’t hide his excitement and has spilled some details on his blog. Here’s the translation of Lee’s microblog: The Apple Tablet looks like a bigger iPhone that sports an awesome UI packed in a beautiful 10.1-inch screen. The tablet combines the functions of both netbook and kindle, an ebook reader. It has virtual keyboard for text entry and a webcam for video conferencing Apple seems to have high expectations for the new gadget – word is that Apple will be making 10 million units of this tablet in the...

Orange Announce HD Calling – Super Clear Hi Def Chat via GadgetyNews.com January 2nd, 2010 at 14:33

image A new year and Orange have revealed their latest weapon in the battle of the networks. Orange has announced that they’re bringing HD to voice calls this year. Hi Def calling is promised to make you feel like the caller is in the same room as you (good thing or not?) as well as filtering out background noise to make calling much clearer. Orange said: “High definition voice doubles the spectrum devoted to the spoken voice, making it possible to transmit all the nuances of the human voice.” Orange’s HD Voice service promises improved audio quality between the bandwidths of 50-7000 Hz, compared to the current narrowband speech codec of 300-3400 Hz. If this sounds like a good thing to you chances are you’re going to need a new HD handset in order to get the benefit of...

YouTube to Add Gaming Portal via GadgetyNews.com December 30th, 2009 at 12:50

image YouTube could be increasing its web monopoly by also becoming an interactive gaming portal as well as somewhere to play 80’s music videos and clips of kittens. The recent Google  patent application for a “Web-based System for Generation of Interactive Games Based on Digital Videos,” was filed earlier this year but has only been published this month. The Google patent points to a system where the creation of video annotations can be used for gaming-like mechanics and video behavior change.  I’m taking this as putting a game together that jumps from video to video based on your answers or responses or even will stop a vid at a point until the correct response has been made. In their own words: “Systems and methods are provided for adding and displaying interactive...

Asus ECleaner – Cheaper iRoomba Comes with UV Disinfecting Light via GadgetyNews.com December 29th, 2009 at 17:46

Instead of going for the oddness of the Panasonic Fukitorimushi Worm Asus have followed the way of the iRoomba but pricing it at the equivalent of £95 you could well make a saving. It comes with a self-charging home base and is armed with a spinning side brush, front bumper, a 6000 hour UV light for disinfecting the floor, an air freshener slot as well as a remote control. Eneloop Music Booster to Power Your Guitar Effect Pedals via GadgetyNews.com December 29th, 2009 at 16:35

image Most performing musicians will know the pain of trailing power to the front of the stage in order to power their effects pedals. Amps and the like are easy enough catered for but, especially if you have vocal duties as well, pedals are usually positioned by the front stage/monitor/mic area and the latest product released under the Sanyo ‘Eneloop’ brand, the ‘Music Booster’, should help. It’s a rechargeable DC 9V battery unit specifically designed for music devices. Sanyo is marketing the product as a long-lasting 9V power source for effects and the likes. These devices are usually powered by an AC adapter or a 9V dry-cell battery, both of which might not be available or likely to run out when you least want it to. Sanyo claims their lithium-ion eneloop battery...

Google Branded Netbook Packing Chrome OS Coming Soon – Google Hardware via GadgetyNews.com December 17th, 2009 at 22:25

image Hot on the heels of the Google branded Nexus One smartphone comes the news that they’re going to be dishing out their own 3G enabled netbook! Apparently “multiple sources” are saying that Google has been talking to at least one hardware manufacturer about building a netbook that Google itself could sell directly. These ’sources’ claim that the big G is aiming for Christmas 2010 for the netbook’s release and that they’d be built and branded by Google and then shipped directly to consumers. It kinda makes sense when you look at the facts – the source code for Chrome OS was recently released, Acer is planning a Chrome OS netbook for mid 2010 and Google looks to be heading into hardware. What do you think? Related posts:Google Chrome OS...

Acer Liquid A1 Now Available in UK – First Snapdragon Android Smartphone via GadgetyNews.com December 9th, 2009 at 19:09

image Cast your gadgety minds back to October and Acer’s announcement of their Liquid A1 Android powered smartphone. Now, The Acer Liquid A1 is for sale and stands as being the first handset from anyone to run Google’s mobile Andoid OS on Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon hardware – albeit underclocked to 768MHz. Don’t ask me why – they just have. But if you do buy this you’ll have the bragging rights to having the only model phone to run this processor for a while as, to my mind, the others wont start to appear til well into 2010. Now, most companies would’ve created quite the song-and-dance about the release of a world’s first and new product – but not so Acer. I’ve discovered this news quite by accident to be honest. As a recap: The...

Crunchpad Released as Joojoo – Fusion Garage Dismiss Techcrunch as “Just a blog” via GadgetyNews.com December 8th, 2009 at 12:57

image There’s been a lot of “it’s on” and then “it’s off” articles regarding the fate of the fabled Crunchpad. Unlike a lot of my fellow bloggers, I have resisted in reporting on every twisty-turny-onny-offy rumour about Michael Arrington’s much-hyped internet tablet. But, as this talked-about tablet has just been unveiled at a press conference by developers Fusion Garage I thoughy it was time to join in the fray. The CrunchPad is now named JooJoo and will go on sale for $400 this Friday, December 11. Fusion Garage’s CEO, Chandra Rathakrishnan, says that the Joojoo is not a tablet PC – Huh? The reason for that is that, yes, it does have a tablet form factor but it boots straight into the internet browser and will not run apps. Joojoo will only...

Twinty Releases Virtual London – Delays Expected via GadgetyNews.com December 7th, 2009 at 13:56

image You can now wander around the UK capital without leaving the comfort of your puter. Well – bits any how. Just like the real London the virtual version is beset by numerous delays. Twinity, kinda like Second Life with real places, has finally launched a beta of virtual London. Twinty was launched back in 2006 with a promise to model all the worlds major cities; and while London was always planned to follow Berlin and Singapore it has taken quite a while to get to where it is now. Don’t nip onto your Apple puter though and expect to be slipping down Soho – the 3D browser only supports Windows XP and Vista. At the moment PC users can visit London’s famous Soho district, “stretching virtually from Oxford Street down to Trafalgar Square including the world-famous Piccadilly...

Tiny Aluminium CompuLab Machine is a Fit Windows 7 Desktop PC [fit-PC2i] via GadgetyNews.com December 4th, 2009 at 19:46

image CompuLab is quite well known for producing tinsy-tiny puters. This mini-marvel measures a mere 4 x 4.5 x 1.05 inches and weighs in at only13 ounces, the fit-PC2i is hailed as the planet’s smallest dual gigabit Ethernet-equipped PC and at the mo I’m willing to believe it. Don’t be fooled by its small size though. It aint no toy – this is a real and viable PC. The fit-PC2i is based around an Intel Z5xx (1.1 to 2 GHz) processor, the fit adds up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, built-in WiFi and space for a 2.5 inch HDD. You can hook it up via four USB 2.0 ports, 2 gigabit Ethernet ports, S/PDIF and, confusingly, DVI – surely that space could be used for HDMI? It supports 1080p video playback, includes an IR receiver and runs Windows 7. This means as a media machine sat next to...

Uno Electric Racing Unicycle Now Real – Not as Exciting via GadgetyNews.com December 4th, 2009 at 17:22

image Remember the funky Canadian Uno concept from last year? Part TT Racer, Part unicycle. You know, the unholy coupling of a Yamaha R6 and a Segway? It blew me away with its almost Akira futurism. Now it’s a really real thing and you’d think that I’d still be blown away – even more so now it’s a reality. Well……….. not quite. Unfortunately as soon as the Uno hits 20mph instead of looking like Kaneda’s choice of racer it transforms into an odd-looking regular two-wheeled thing (See the pic in the gallery below). Ben Gulak, the Uno’s inventor covers himself by saying: “The original Uno was quite scary to speed up on. This is a much more user-friendly experience.” Whoever gets on a motorbike for a safe and friendly...

Creative Zii Trinity Phone Needs to Meet its Maker via GadgetyNews.com December 1st, 2009 at 14:03

image The Creative Zii Trinity phone is another one of those iPhone killers and it has just been announced today. The dual OS handset is rocking a 3.1 inch OLED multitouch display, five megapixel camera, and support for 1080p video playback on a big screen. Just one draw-back: is anyone going to make this phone? Thing is, the Creative Zii Trinity Android phone is a reference model, like the Zii Egg Android iPod touch rival before it. So – we need some blower-maker to make this reality but the likes of LG and Samsung probably wont be in the queue as they make their own displays. Nokia N900 Delayed by Success via GadgetyNews.com November 26th, 2009 at 14:26

image Have you been patiently awaiting the arrival of your Nokia N900 after loyally preordering it earlier this month? It appears that the new Nokia has been hit by its own success and now you’ll have to add another week to your wait. If you don’t quite remember what makes this handset so enticing the N900 runs on the new Maemo 5 operating system – which makes it one of the best browsing devices out there apparently. It sports a 3.5 inch QVGA touchscreen and you get 32GB of internal storage as well as a 5 megapixel snapper. NokNok has reported that so many pre-orders were taken on Nokia’s online store and at their flagship high street stores in London, Manchester and Terminal 5, that the release has had to be pushed back to the 5th of December. Nokia has listed the N900...

image Zune coming to UK? Yeah – that’s what I thought when I was told this. I reckoned that these very shores were going to get a taste of the MP3 player that was designed to take on Apple’s iPod. Ok, so almost four years later the Zune only owns 2% of the US MP3 market – a tad short of the iPod’s 73%. But, before that bubble of yours gets to big – I’m not talking about that Zune HD PMP. This ‘Zune’ refers to the remodelled movie and music streaming and download service about to hit the Xbox 360. Microsoft has decided to rethink its strategy and aim at making the Zune name into a bigger brand. This so called “three screens” (PC, TV, mobile) approach will change the way you watch movies on Xbox LIVE from Tuesday. First: you’ll be able to stream them...

Other main specs include a 12.1MP full-frame sensor, though it won’t be shooting 1080p videos but rather just 720p. iTunes LP Lets the Indie Labels in via GadgetyNews.com October 13th, 2009 at 12:45

image iTunes LP ruffled plenty many feathers when US Indie label, Chocolate Lab, claimed Apple was keeping the new album artwork format for the majors only citing an incredible $10,000 production fee for iTunes LP. An Apple spokesperson has announced that it’s “releasing the open specs for iTunes LP soon, allowing both major and indie labels to create their own. There is no production fee charged by Apple.” This means that self-funding bands such as Subset and any label will soon be able to put together their own iTunes LP files. If you’re not sure what iTunes LP is – for those old enough to remember the joys of getting your 12 inch vinyl long player home you get a similar experience. While you listen to your favorite songs, you can dive into animated lyrics and liner...

Apple releases iPhone OS 3.1.2 via GadgetLite - Latest gadgets and technology news October 9th, 2009 at 09:20

image Readers: Take part to win a free Wi-Fire - long range WiFi adapter! Apple releases iPhone OS 3.1.2 Its not been very long since iPhone OS 3.1 was released but Apple yesterday just released an update for the iPhone OS, upgrading it to 3.1.2. Though this appears to be just a minor update fixing the widely reported issues where the iPhone would not wake from sleep and also an issue involving video streaming, playback and cellular service, we would recommend any iPhone user who has a jailbroken / unlocked iPhone to delay from installing this update. For those not jailbreaking their iPhones or are using their iPhones with your default carrier, you can go straight ahead and download this update which is available through iTunes for the original iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS (as well as the...

Phillipe Starck Works Design Magic on LaCie Drives via GadgetyNews.com October 7th, 2009 at 14:27

image Remember those Parrott speakers by Phillipe Starck that appeared here around Christmas last year? Well, he enjoyed that slice of consumer tech so much he’s only gone over to French hardware manufacturer, LaCie, and added that Starck “Je na se qua” to some hard drives. LaCie have a bit of a history of adding some nice aesthetic touches as well as the engineering of their products. Remember the hardware that Scottish born Industrial and product designer, Neil Poulton produced? LaCie now have a couple of external hard drives designed by Pip Starck. How would I describe them? Well, that would be pointless after Mr Starck pretty much covers everything when he spoke of them thus: “Technological genius explodes exponentially, each time with incredible power whose limits are yet to...

Voda iPhone – Another Network Joins O2 and Orange to Sell Apple iPhones via GadgetyNews.com September 29th, 2009 at 13:28

image Following on from yesterday’s news that Orange will be flogging Apple’s iPhone soon here in the UK Vodafone has gloved-up in the red corner. Vodafone has announced this morning that it will sell both the iPhone 3G and 3GS in the UK and Ireland in “early 2010″. Vodafone, just like Orange, is still playing things close to its chest regarding costs. So – another network joining in can only be good news for us, the buyer as this must surely start a pricing battle. It is only fair, as I showed yesterday how O2 and Orange weigh up in the 3G coverage stakes, to show Vodafone’s UK coverage as well – so, check the gallery pic Why not pad over to Voda’s Web site and register your interest? Honda U3-X – The Portable Segway via GadgetyNews.com September 28th, 2009 at 22:49

image If you’re looking for a way to cruise the footpaths a little more portable than a Segway then perhaps you should visit Honda on your shopping spree. Honda has developed a personal mobility technology, U3-X, that kinda looks like a futuristic unicycle. The experimental device fits between the rider’s legs – how many times has that line be used? It provides free movement in all directions. The usual forwards and backwards but also slings in side-to-side even diagonal into the mix! Honda’s prototype has an internal self-balancing system–the single large wheel is actually made up of a number of smaller motor-control wheels that allow the U3-X to move in all directions without leaving the rider in a crumpled heap. It also includes a HOT Drive System, which is an...

LG BL20 Coming to UK – Funsized Chocolate Mobile Phone via GadgetyNews.com September 28th, 2009 at 18:37

image Exactly a week a go I shared some video footage of the widescreened BL40’s smaller sibling – the LG BL20. As I said before it’s a scaled-down version of the premium 21:9 handset and may only have GPRS connectivity, Bluetooth, microSD card slot, an FM radio and a 2.4 inch QVGA screen it manages to stay just 12.3mm thick even with its slide-out keyboard. The snapper is a decent 5.0 megapixel job with autofocus and flash. Talktime is listed as five hours, with standby time 450 hours and will be available in time for Christmas shopping and is whispered to be an O2 exclusive (as they’re losing that deal with the iPhone). Pink Pure and Turtle Pictures Escape From Microsoft via GadgetyNews.com September 24th, 2009 at 13:29

image You know that the first details broke of the Microsoft-backed phones earlier this week. Today you get to see the real things! What you get is the Moto/Palm styled ‘Turtle’ and the ‘Pure’ is the one that appears to share heritage with the Google G1. As already stated both handsets will be made by Sharp who, incedentally, also make the hardware for the Sidekick handset. The pics seem to be the only new news apart from the candybar Pure has a slidey out keypad and the fact that these phones seem to have a focus on the ‘youth’ market (more Sidekick leanings) and there’s whispers of a related app store and that Zune functionality. Thing is – the Sidekick is more popular stateside and Microsoft has said a huge no to the Zune coming to the UK. So...

Yeah that range of hi-res, quick response LCD panels that measure in at a very slender 16.5mm thin. Good news folks! The Designo range will be getting a full UK launch in a week or so and I’ve even got a price for the 23.6 inch model – £244. That matches in with the rumoured €299 price tag for the flagship Asus Designo MS monitor over in Italy. This is also great news as that should surely mean that the 20 incher and the rest of the range will be cheaper than that More as I get it!! Pure Pink Turtles – New Microsoft+Sharp Smartphones via GadgetyNews.com September 21st, 2009 at 14:40

image It’s been a tad quiet out there in Microsoft Pink land seeing as the Zune has been capturing most of the headlines. But – now 9to5Mac of all places claims to have advanced word of what Microsoft Pink actually is…… Apparently Redmond HQ will be busting out a pair of smartphones, with the help of subsidiary – Danger. This also means that instead of the HTC gear that was originally hinted at the hardware will be thanks to Sharp – Both phones could be branded as “Microsoft+Sharp”. As you might expect, the two Microsoft Pink phones will take different form factors: one the “Turtle”, will be kinda like the Motorola QA1 pictured and the “Pure” will be more like a regular candybar slider. These phones are said to debut at CES in January....
