Paul Newman via living with cancer October 5th, 2008 at 17:11

One week ago today Paul Newman finally lost his fight against cancer, Sunday 28 September 2008. He was a remarkable man who not only gave us much joy in his films but also gave much in time and money to charity. If I live to 83 I promise to do more than do currently over the next 34 years to help those less fortunate than...

Ann Widdecome On Paul Newman via Anorak News | Head Master: School Bans Hair To The Perpendicular October 1st, 2008 at 10:53

image ANN Widdecombe is discussing Paul Newman: “He also knew when to stop acting, an example many others would have benefitted from following” Not including his voiceover work, Newman appeared in Empire Falls in 2005. His work won him an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. Newman was scheduled to make his professional stage directing debut with the Westport Country Playhouse’s 2008 production of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. He stepped down in May. Actors never stop working, they just try to rest in peace… Paul Newman Is Dead But There Are Icons Aplenty Tarnishing The Paul Newman......

Tarnishing The Paul Newman Idol via Anorak News | Tarnishing The Paul Newman Idol September 30th, 2008 at 13:47

image PAUL Newman is dead, and the Mirror’s Sue Carroll salutes the “family man”. Newman had six children, three from an early marriage that ended in divorce and three with actress Joanne Woodward, whom he married in 1958. A two family man. Over in the Telegraph, Tim Walker says that actress Greta Scacchi tells him she once saw Newman in a “compromsing situation”. With his wife> Walker does not say. First the idol dies. Then the idol gets torn...

Old blue eyes didn’t get… via Toxic Web September 30th, 2008 at 13:41

…his due yesterday. Having put up my usual Monday post about the ineptness of the Spurs board, management and players and then following that up with Moose finally winning his 20th I forgot to post about Paul Newman dying. One of the last great stars of Hollywood, what do we have now but mental midgets in funny cults, who it seems didn’t take himself that serious just because he read out loud in front of a camera. I picture my epitaph: ‘Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown.’ - Paul Newman When someone like Newman died in the past the TV channels would be lining up film after film in tribute “The Color Of Money” with the aforementioned midget was on last night, by coincidence, not exactly his greatest, if they do a...

The first film I ever saw was The Towering Inferno, staring Steve McQueen (long-since deceased) and Paul Newman (who died this weekend). It was therefore a somewhat poignant moment when I heard the news about the latter’s death, he was truly one of Hollywood’s greats and one of the main reasons I’ve been come such a big fan of the moving picture art form. My favourite Paul Newman movies are as follows… Cool Hand Luke Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid The Hustler The Hudsucker Proxy The Towering Inferno       ...

Paul Newman: an appreciation via Hope Springs May 31st, 2007 at 19:02

image It came as a bit of a shock to hear Paul Newman has retired from acting. This was not because Hollywood is losing one of its titans (although it is), but because I’d assumed he’d done it years ago: his cinematic output in the past two decades has been slim, tapering off into cartoon voiceovers. His early career (the first 30 years!), however, gave us some wonderful performances which his retirement should call to mind.My favourite one earned him his first Oscar nod, in 1958: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He was perfect as Brick Politt, the troubled husband of the felinely fragile yet cunning Elizabeth Taylor. While she tried to seduce him for the sake of her femininity and their future together, he pined over his best friend and the passing of his sporting glory days. He could flip in a...

Islington: Pay rise for councillors and Roadkill-gate via Suz Blog April 30th, 2007 at 00:18

Local news this week is a bit of a mixed bag.The LibDems administration in Islington are certainly not doing themselves any favours with their recent increase in Councillor allowances. According to the Islington Tribune the councillors have voted for themselves a staggering 5.5 per cent inflation-busting pay rise. That's just being greedy.Personally I've never been very happy the way the allowance were agreed upon under the previous administration. The gap between the executive payment and the backbenchers is too much. Generally though it's widely known that Islington councillor allowances are amongst the highest in the country. With adjacent Camden and Haringey borough on much lower rates it seems ridiculous at this time for Islington to add another hefty hike. Would have been a more...
