Apple Magic Mouse via Neil Turner's blog March 13th, 2010 at 18:38

My £7 wireless mouse from Tesco decided to stop syncing last week, and after spending a few days surviving with a wired mouse that no longer right-clicked I decided to get a new mouse. Having looked at what PC World had to offer (and the prices), I ended up settling for the new Apple Magic Mouse. At £56 it was pricey, but then Apple tends to have good build quality so hopefully it'll last a while, and I was impressed with the demonstration mouse in the shop. Design-wise it looks very good - side-on it looks symmetrical, and if it weren't for the Apple logo at the bottom it would be possible to use it the wrong way up. It's also very flat, which takes getting used to. Despite the fact it takes two AA batteries (supplied), it's also quite light. Scrolling is achieved by essentially...

Get Apple iPad in UK Before Anyone else Without Leaving the Country via GadgetyNews.com March 12th, 2010 at 21:37

image If you like the idea of flashing an Apple iPad around Blighty before the rest of the fanboys and girls but would rather not have to fly stateside to make it so then here’s the answer my gadgety faithful. Slip in your order to www.bundlebox.com from right now because pre-ordering is now on over the pond. No need to wait for that pesky UK release date! BundleBox, if you’re not familiar with the name, was set up by former Google exec Andre Schmidt last year and lets UK consumers buy from any US website. It’s basically an online transatlantic shopping service that lets us in the UK register for a free USA postal address meaning that we can sign on to the pre-order service despite the current US residency restriction. Just simply sign up to Bundlebox, select...

Apple don’t own the lower-case ‘i’ via BitterWallet March 12th, 2010 at 15:00

image The lower-case ‘i’ is Apple’s best friend. Simply plonking an ‘i’ in front of something immediately marks it out as an Apple product, or, in the case of someone trying to make an easy joke, a pisstake of an Apple product. Example – ‘What next? A bloody iColostomy?! Hur hur hur…‘. However, a trademarks tribunal has ruled that Apple no longer holds a monopoly on the letter ‘i’ as a prefix for products, meaning that all those previous words are effectively useless. Thanks a pissing bunch, trademarks tribunal. This ruling came about in Australia as Apple attempted to stop Wholesale Central trademarking the DOPi name (did you notice that it is ‘iPod’ but backwards? Did you?) for its range of cases and bags for Apple...

iPhone 4G Leaked Pics or Return to Render? via GadgetyNews.com March 12th, 2010 at 14:36

image Now leaks are one thing and, being the untrusting fellow that I am, even though I want these shots of the iPhone 4G to be real I can’t help but shout ‘render!’. True; plenty of work has gone into this and the exposed brickwork setting is very tasteful but something isn’t sitting right. I like the idea of a choice of colours and docks for the next gen iPhone – do we still think it will have the name of 4G? Let’s face it; who thought Stevie J would go for iPad as a name? These ‘leaked’ shots are all in their full glory on umpcfever.com. I hope I’m wrong but I’m just not feeling this – are you? Video: Lenovo tablet netbook S10-3t or iPad? via GadgetLite - Latest gadgets and technology news March 12th, 2010 at 12:00

image Check out our new £250 Amazon voucher giveaway! Video: Lenovo tablet netbook S10-3t or iPad? What makes the newly unveiled Lenovo S10-3t comparable to the Apple iPad is that it is like the T91 which means its a netbook but is also capable of transforming into a touchscreen tablet. What makes the S10-3t tempting (at least for Windows users) is that it runs on Windows 7 and most users will be happy to stick with software that they’ve been using on their home desktop. While on the other hand, going for an iPad would mean having to adapt to a new OS and the only source of apps being the App Store. In a way the iPad is less open source. However, as you will see in the below video, the S10-3t with a swivel touchscreen gets abit too luxurious, given that it is still at the end of the day...

Dell Mini 5 Streak Tablet comes with Amazon Kindle Love via GadgetyNews.com March 10th, 2010 at 14:46

image Dell’s Mini 5 tablet, or rather the Dell Streak, seems to be squaring up to join Microsoft’s Courier and Apple’s iPad in the ring. With it’s regular tablety form I reckon Apple should be the more concerned. The Dell Mini 5 leak reveals the ‘Streak’ moniker and as it seems to have been used since October chances are that it’s more than a codename. So, the Android loving Streak features a 5″ WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen, capacitive buttons on the front as well as a front-facing VGA camera for video chat with a 5MP camera with autofocus on flash round back. The leaked presentation also reveals that the device will come in an array of colours and offer the opportunity for custom skins through Dell Design Studio. Now, Apple should...

Microsoft Courier more Desirable than Apple iPad? via GadgetyNews.com March 9th, 2010 at 21:37

image Ok, so the iPad isn’t floating everyone’s boat is it? I’ve actually been interested in Microsoft’s offering for quite some time now and there’s some more info seeping through about the twin screened tablet known as Courier. So, we all already know that the Courier will react in a nice way to being stroked and poked by either finger or stylus but the video below also shows that Microsoft’s Courier has shrunk since we first got sneaky peeks at it. The shrinkage will obviously help it be more portable and, as it looks to be around 5″x7″ and about an inch think, should be luggable +++ It beats the Apple table by seemingly sporting a camera. The Courier, as well as having the pinch-zoom touchscreeness can also recognise...

Wall Of Sound: The Biggest iPod Speaker In The World! via Technology Blog (UK), Hi-Tech Gadgets & Gaming - Zath! March 9th, 2010 at 19:23

image So when exactly could an iPod speaker be considered over the top? When the neighbours come knocking? When the police get called? Nope, now it seems there is a new benchmark – size. Introducing the Wall Of Sound which dwarfs any personal speaker I have ever seen in my lifetime. Weighing in at 225 pounds and completely handmade, the Wall Of Sound can be purchased for mammoth price of $4,495. Promoted as the world’s most powerful iPod speaker, the Wall Of Sound has a frequency response of 40Hz – 20,00kHz, which is impressive to say the least. Here is the actual description of the product as seen on the official website; So would you buy one? Or more importantly, could you fit one in your house? I know I couldn’t, perhaps this is something for Steve Jobs himself,...

Focus On Imaging Exhibition Review (Photo & Video Image Capture) via Technology Blog (UK), Hi-Tech Gadgets & Gaming - Zath! March 9th, 2010 at 13:55

image Last Sunday I was lucky enough to visit the annual Focus on Imaging exhibition where I joined the anticipated 35,000 other people that will be coming through the doors of the NEC over the next few days (until this Wednesday 10th March 2010, so it’s not too late for you to pay it a visit) to see what has become the most popular photographic show in the country. What everyone comes to see is one of the biggest concentrations of cameras and anything vaguely related to them this side of Buckingham Palace, and to see some of the biggest names in the business showing off their best and newest offerings to the market: people such as Panasonic, Nikon, Canon, Adobe, Epson, Fuji, HP… I could go on! So having spent a good few hours there I’ll give you a little taste of what you’ll be...

Penguin Books indulge in some iPad futurology via BitterWallet March 9th, 2010 at 10:15

You might have picked up on the fact that we’re quite excited about the impending arrival of the Apple iPad next month, but it’s easy to see why some people think that it’s nothing more than a bigger version of the iPod Touch. Sort of the same way that a bus is just like a bigger version of a car. Fortunately, some major companies are getting ready for the advent of touch-screen tablet computing (yes, other tablets will be available) and are doing some good hard imagineering about how the new format can be best used. Here’s a glimpse into the future courtesy of Penguin Books and it shows that the iPad will be so much more than an (already-obsolete) eReader. There’s interactive games for little people that make use of the touch-screen and motion sensor capabilities along with...

Nike+ Running Sensor & iPhone App Review via Technology Blog (UK), Hi-Tech Gadgets & Gaming - Zath! March 8th, 2010 at 17:46

image Nike paired up with Apple to produce, what I think, is a great piece of running kit to encourage you to get out and about, walking or running. What is the Nike+ Sensor for? The Nike+ sensor and app track your running progress while you’re out and about through distance, speed and calories. It’s a little like the stats given to you while running on a treadmill. It’s great to have those milestones to help you keep going, even while listening to music. The app gives you stats to take away and feel good about. What you need to get started In order to get going with Nike+, you will need: Nike+ sensor Nike+ shoe with special slot for the sensor in the sole Computer with internet access, iTunes and a free Nike.com account Either: an iPhone 3GS, or an iPod Touch 2G, or an iPod Nano...

World’s first video game with no video: binaural iPhone gaming via Ewan McIntosh | Digital Media & Education March 8th, 2010 at 14:33

Entering the Palace of Bones from Papa Sangre on Vimeo. Papa Sangre has been in development since mid-last year, having been commissioned by 4iP as the world's first audio-only, 3D audio no less, video game for mobile: Papa Sangre is a video game with no video. It’s a first-person thriller, done entirely in audio by an award-winning team of game designers, musicians, sound designers and developers. We’ve created an entire world using the first ever real-time 3D audio engine implemented on a handheld device. Which was BLOODY HARD. I do like a bit of doing the opposite, a touch of Edward de Bono's 'Po' way of thinking. It means you come up with interesting ideas (that no-one else did) and new ways of perceiving the world around us. And it wasn't easy - they had to blast sound into...

Sony PSP Phone and Tablet may Become Reality via GadgetyNews.com March 8th, 2010 at 14:04

image The mythical PSP Phone as well as an iPad baiting tablet may well slip out from Sony – Well, that’s how the Wall Street Journal sees it. Sony CEO Howard Stringer is looking towards Apple for inspiration in order to bring success back to Sony’s door. The Japanese company is already making steps with its Sony Online Service having iTunes firmly in its sights and add that to a bunch of new mobile gadgets to use SOS – it sounds like plots are forming. The report claims a source says that there will be a PSP-phone and an iPad style tablet that “blurs distinctions among a netbook, an e-reader and a PSP.” These new devices will join the PSP Go and get access to SOS which will enable them access to games, music, movies and, more-than-likely, e-books....

Apple iPad UK Release Date Clarified via GadgetyNews.com March 8th, 2010 at 13:32

image Apple has almost come up with a definite UK release date for their iPad. Where stateside gadgety fans will be able to pounce on the new Wi-Fi tablet on April 3rd and the 3G version later the same month we in the UK will get both by the end of April. US customers can pre-order the Wi-Fi models from 12 March, but not so for us in Blighty – we can’t pre-release purchase at all. Apple has also said that the iBooks app and iBookstore will be available in the US on 3 April, with “additional countries added later this year”. I’m hoping that the land of the Union Flag will also be getting this, even though there’s indications to the contrary, as surely this is one of the major selling points of the iPad – or am I still confused?...

Will Apple’s new patent turn the iPhone into the iKey? via BitterWallet March 8th, 2010 at 09:00

image Some apples yesterday. It is unknown whether or not they contain keys Apple have reportedly filed a patent for a piece of wacky space-age technology that will allow iPhone users to use the much-lauded device to act as a replacement for keys for the likes of the family car or the family home. In the patent, which the Telegraph claim has been filed in the US of Americana, the following words appear… “The device can communicate with an external device to open a lock. By way of example, the electronic device may be a model of an iPhone. The external device may be any suitable electronic device such as a portable media player, personal data assistant or electronic lock that may be used to access a door, car, house or other physical area.” Known as Near Field Communication, it’s a...

Apple iPad to hit the US this April 3 via Coolest Gadgets March 6th, 2010 at 02:32

Well, fans of the iPad will be pleased to know that the magical and revolutionary device is tipped to hit the US market on April 3rd, although this is limited to just its Wi-Fi models while others who want the high end Wi-Fi + 3G models will have to wait until the end of April. There will no doubt be some discrepancies in terms of pricing, if you’re in the US, you’re looking at the following pricing. Even if you’re...

Sony ICG-CL75iP Dream Machine – Hands on Review via GadgetyNews.com March 5th, 2010 at 14:35

image I’m a fan of gadgety convergence – especially when it makes sense. Just look at the Tefal Toast n Egg So when I was told that I could have a test run of a clock radio I was a bit like ‘wow – that’s never been done before! I bet it doesn’t even make me a coffee.’ But then they said that not only was it a clock radio, it was a digital photo frame and an iPhone dock and charger. It sounds like an ideal bedroom buddy. ‘Bring it’ on said I! Looking at the Sony ICF-CL75iP I could tell that it wasn’t cheap tat and it seems well designed with a hide-away dock and a good sized, clear WVGA display. The snooze button is exactly where it should be and is large enough for that half-hearted, half-aimed slap that befalls...

Facts from speculation on iPad launch via The Guardian World News March 5th, 2010 at 11:28

Why the collapse in online advertising might be leading you to read pretty much anything about Apple's new gizmoHey, have you heard? Apple's iPad is having production problems! And it's not having production problems! Also, it's going to cost £389! Or possibly less, or more. And in the UK the 3G version is going to be exclusively on Vodafone. As well as being on Orange and O2. Also, it's going to be released in the UK two weeks after the US, where it's being released on March 26, or actually 29th, except it's being released at the same time. And it's going to cost..OK, enough breathless murmery. Let's clear the air. There is an astonishing amount of speculation going on about Apple's iPad. Very little of it seems well-founded - or even grounded in logic. The facts about the iPad: Apple...

How to Reset/Restore Your iPhone 3G/3GS via Technology Blog (UK), Hi-Tech Gadgets & Gaming - Zath! March 2nd, 2010 at 16:28

image In the past I’ve written about my experiences of Apple’s big iPhone 3.0 software update in which I’ve had my doubts over useful the update itself was and found that after two months I had to try to restore my (then) iPhone 3G PAYG as I suspected (or hoped) the problems I had were due to some corrupted files and not a hardware fault. Now as much as I like to do my fair share of Apple-bashing like any decent PC user and coupled with the highly annoying iTunes sluggishness we experience in Windows, I have to admit that they have made managing your iPhone day-to-day in terms of synchronising, backing up and restoring it when needed very simple and effective. Unfortunately, iPhones are not without their faults, issues and problems like any other mobile phone or mini-computer, the...

Assassin’s Creed II Multiplayer – Download FREE For 48 Hours via GadgetyNews.com March 1st, 2010 at 14:44

image Yup – I’m downloading as I type. Ubisoft has released the multiplayer edition of Assassin’s Creed II for iPhone, and it’s completely free to download for the first two days! Beautiful! Don’t be expecting a friend frenzy version of the original Assassin’s Creed II iPhone game though. This is a birds-eye view sneak fest and not the glossy 3D full console game featuring voice actors and all that. You still have to rely on stealth and go around assassinating folk; but the great thing is that you’ll be playing against real-life opponents. You can play against up to three other players over Wi-Fi. Nice Ignoring the graphics and the change of view the gameplay is pretty much the same as you’ve come to know and love. You can sneak around in...

It's probably not a "phishing attack": Microsoft Windows users in Europe are now starting to get a screen that offers them a choice of web browsers, as a result of an anti-trust settlement with the European Commission.Up to 200m Windows PC users in Europe will be presented with a "Web browser choice screen" screen in a scheme that helped settle the European Commission's anti-trust complaints against Microsoft. Following the agreement, Microsoft abandoned plans to ship boxed copies of Windows 7 in Europe without a browser at all. Windows users who subscribe to Microsoft's automated Windows Update service and who have set Internet Explorer as their default browser will be sent a screen that offers them a choice of 12 browsers, including IE, with the top five presented first, in random...

Apple stuff made by ickle Chinese children while irate Mexican workers burn down Mac factory via BitterWallet February 28th, 2010 at 10:00

image Attention Apple users! You probably think you’re so smug don’t you, with your iPods and your iPhones and your this and that and the sleekly-designed other. Well you’re not. Because all of your aesthetically-pleasing gizmos are built by CHILD SLAVES! Yes, they’re ALL assembled in Far Eastern caves by 999 blind nine-year-olds who work at lightning speeds for fear of getting a good hiding from the riding crop of the evil henchman who runs the gaff. Suicide rates are at an all-time high and work-related stress statistics are so huge that they cannot be accurately measured. And all of this so that you can play Peggle on your frigging iPhone on the bus to work in the mornings. Still feeling smug are you? Well? A crying child, yesterday Of course, we’ve exaggerated just a smidgeon...
