Apple has today announced that it is lifting the restrictions on third part developer tools for creating applications for iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Along with this announcement, Apple has also issued a set of guidelines for developers who are looking to submit applications to the app store, you can see an excerpt from the main guidelines below, it make for pretty interesting reading.
We have lots of kids downloading lots of apps, and parental controls don’t work unless the parents
set them up (many don’t). So know that we’re keeping an eye out for the kids.
We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don’t need any more Fart apps. If your app doesn’t
do something useful or provide some form of lasting entertainment, it may not be...

After numerous criticisms by developers and in a slightly surprising announcement Apple has revealed they “are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps” and “publishing app review guidelines.”
Apple Announcment:
The App Store℠ has revolutionized the way mobile applications are developed and distributed. With over 250,000 apps and 6.5 billion downloads, the App Store has become the world’s largest mobile application platform and App Store developers have earned over one billion dollars from the sales of their apps.
We are continually trying to make the App Store even better. We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our...

VLC is probably the most popular video playback application on Windows, Mac and Linux, it will let you play back virtually any video format, and now the developers have submitted a version designed for the iPad to Apple for approval.
The developers have also announced that they have a version in the works for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and they are hoping that if Apple approve VLC for the iPad it should be available in the App store next week.
Lets keep our fingers crossed that Apple approves VLC for the iPad, this certainly would be a cool app to have on the iPad. As soon as we get more information we will let you guys know.

Yesterday Apple rolled out the latest version of their iOS, iOS 4.1, which brought a range of new features to the iPhone and iPod Touch. One of the new features added was Game Center and Apple has now updated the App store with a dedicated Game Center section.
The Game Center section in the App Store lists all the current games that are currently compatible with the new gaming service.

Game Center is designed to be a social gaming network, you can play games online with your friends on your iPhone or iPod Touch, there are also leadeboards and achievements that can be found with...

Earlier today we told you that the iPhone Dev Team had discovered a new exploit in iOS 4.1, which all allow for the iPhone 4 to be jailbroken. Members of the iPhone Dev Team are currently working on the jailbreak for iOS 4.1, and are expected to release it soon.
Msucle Nerd has confirmed on Twitter that the jailbreak will work on other devices as well as the iPhone 4, which will include the latest generation iPod Touch and the iPad when it gets updated.
That latest exploit from @pod2g confirmed to work beyond iPhone4…also on at least iPad and yesterday’s iPod4G too
The iPhone Dev team are recommending that you don’t upgrade to iOS 4.1 for the moment, and wait until they release the jailbreak, as soon as we have more information on when it will be available.......

iTunes has been a great success for Apple, and their iTunes music downloads are extremely popular, another part of iTunes that is popular is their iOS apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
According to analysts Aysmco, iOS application downloads may over take the number of songs downloaded by the end of the year, which would be pretty impressive considering the amount of songs currently sold through iTunes.
As can be seen, the App store has reached the same total downloads in 2.2 years as the iTMS reached after five years. The two curves are likely to be the same height (around 13 billion each) before the year is over.
The figures on the recent September update to the iTunes App Store and iTunes Music Store, and it seems that the App store has reached the same total downloads in...

Apple [AAPL] released the latest version of their iPhone and iPod Touch OS yesterday, iOS 4.1. The update was designed to fix a number of security bugs as well as bring new features and enhancements to iOS.
Just a couple of hours after Apple released iOS 4.1, hackers have already found a security hole, that can be used to run a jailbreak on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The hole was found by pod2g, a member of the iPhone Dev Team, and it has subsiquently been confirmed by other members of the iPhone Dev Team.
According to the hackers, this new exploit is going to be hard for Apple to close, as it targets a low level part of the operating system, and Apple wont be able to stop the jailbreakers without making some hardware changes.
There are no details as yet on when the iPhone Dev Team will...

Yesterday we showed you the new iPod Shuffle which the guys at iFixit took apart to see what was inside. Now they have done the same to the new iPod Touch.
The new iPod Touch is much slimmer than the previous version, it features Apple’s new A4 processor that can be found in the iPhone 4, and it comes with 256MB of RAM, as opposed to 512MB in the iPhone 4.
According to iFixit, this is the easiest iPod Touch to take apart, it is basically held together with some glue and two tabs. The battery has been soldered to the main board.
It looks like the rear facing camera on the iPod Touch is 0.7 megapixels, which is quite a bit less than the 5 megapixel one in the iPhone 4.
Head on over to iFixit for lots more photos and details of what is inside the new iPod Touch.

The iPad has already been a great success for Apple [AAPL] since it was launched earlier in the year, and it looks like the iPad sales figures will continue to rise at a similar rate.
One Analyst, Maynard Um with UBS Investment research thinks that Apple will sell around 28 million iPads next year, and he is calling this number conservative, also apparently iPad sales are having an affect on the PC industry and not MacBook sales.
“Sales of traditional notebooks appear to be feeling pressure from the iPad, causing a scramble by vendors to launch iPad-like tablets,” Um wrote. “We believe that a majority of this impact is occurring on the lower end of PC sales as the iPad is priced close enough to this range that it becomes attractive to consumers looking to make...

Apple are yet to release iOS 4.1 to iPhone users, although we are expecting it to be released some time today, one of the features in the new iOS 4.1 is now live, Game Center.

The guys over at iFixit are at it again, their latest victim is Apple’s new iPod Shuffle, which they have taken apart to see what is inside. Apparently this was a difficult one to take apart due to the size of the parts.
Inside the new iPod Shuffle is a 3.7 volt battery, which is capable of up to 15 hours of audio playback, and it looks like the battery is actually soldered onto the logic board which means it wont be that easy to replace.
Head on over to iFixit for lost more photos of what is inside Apple’s new iPod Shuffle.

We have featured a number of different battery backup devices for the iPhone here at Geeky Gadgets, and whilst you wont need to use one as much with the iPhone 4 as you did with the 3G and 3GS, heavy users of the iPhone 4 will still need to use one.
One of my favourite cases for the 3G and the 3Gs was the Mophie Juice Pack Air, good news as Mophie have just launched a new version of the Juice Pack Air for the iPhone 4.

The latest rumor doing the rounds is that Apple [AAPL] are going to be launching a camera accessory for the iPad, which could be used to make FaceTime video calls.
The rumor has come about because Steve Jobs said that everything goes to the iPad in iOS 4.2 which is due to be released in November, this would include FaceTime and the new HDR photography.
We suspect that this is just a rumor, and Apple wont be releasing a camera accessory for the iPad, although you never know. We are expecting Apple to release the second generation iPad with built in cameras next year just like the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch.

Personally I have no problem typing on the iPhone’s touchscreen keyboard, but there are many iPhone users who would like a physical keyboard to use with their iPhone 4.

We have heard rumors that the next generation Apple iPad would come with front and back facing cameras, similar to the new iPod Touch which would allow users to use Apple’s FaceTime video chat feature.
The guys over at 9 To 5 Mac have posted an image of a debug screen on the iPad, which shows video calls being tested, something similar appeared before the release of the new iPhone 4.
It would make perfect sense for Apple to launch the next generation iPad with built in cameras, that would let people use FaceTime, and would bring the iPad version of iOS in line with the iPhone 4 and new iPod Touch.
We suspect that when Apple updates the iPad to version 2 next year it will come with dual cameras, especially since we have seen other manufacturers recently release tablets with front...

Apple [AAPL] announced that it would be launching a new version of its iOS at its recent iPod event, iOS 4.1, which Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs said would fix the speed issues users had been experiencing on the iPhone 3G.
Now it seems that users wont have long to wait as Apple will be releasing iOS 4.1 this week, on Wednesday the 8th of September. The details were briefly posted on the Apple UK website, and have now been removed.
iOS 4.1 is designed to fix the speed issues on the iPhone 3G, so the guys over at Lifehacker decided to test out the final release of iOS 4.1 for developers, you can see the results in the video below.
It should be noted that the tests weren’t conducted side by side, this was because they had one iPhone 3g to test it out on. It certainly looks like iOS...

Twitter will be adding push notifications to their iPhone app, and they are currently testing out this new feature, and expect to roll it out to the iPhone app shortly.
We’ve been testing push notifications internally. When we launched Twitter for iPad, there was a configuration error that caused us to offer push messages to a small set of users. We’ve stopped sending push messages, but users may see an option to turn on push until we release an updated version of the app. So, push isn’t ready yet but we look forward to rolling this out soon.

It’s official. According to the latest BCN findings for August this year, Sony’s Walkman has outsold the iPod—in Japan.
It comes as no small surprise given Apple’s near-perfect track record in the land of the rising sun. But lo and behold, Walkman just pwned 47.8% of the music player market while Apple was relegated to a dire 44%.
Despite the rally, bloggers have been quick to point out several factors that may have tipped consumer preference in Sony’s favor.
First, people might have been saving for the new iPod Touch and Nano announced at the start of the month. Because of this, they skipped any further purchases of the ubiquitous Apple music player.
Second, the iPhone and iPad are still the all-time champs in the gadgets league, so Japanese customers may have decided to spend...

On Wednesday, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs announced iTunes 10, one of the new features in iTunes 10 is a social networking service called Ping, when Steve Jobs demoed Ping, it featured Facebook integration.
When Ping went live, there was no Facebook integration, which left many of us wondering exactly what had happened. All Things D are reporting that the reason there is now Facebook integration in Ping is because Facebook has blocked Apple from using its API.
Normally access to Facebooks API doesn’t require any sort of agreement, the time when it does require an agreement is when a service will access Facebook’s API a lot, and that would apply with Ping.
Apple and Facebook have been in discussion, although it seems they couldn’t come to an agreement, and Steve Jobs...
